A man has been accused of attempting to set fire to a unit in Flemington while 13 people, including children, were sheltering inside.

Nuar Wal, 37, was arrested by detectives on Tuesday after allegedly pouring accelerant on the front doors, windows and outside hallway of a Racecourse Rd apartment on Sunday.

Police allege the occupants of the unit asked Mr Wal and another man to stop making noise outside their apartment.

The pair then allegedly assaulted one of the occupants and threatened them about 9.30pm, before accelerant was poured on the home.

Officers soon arrived and searched one of the units in the apartment block and allegedly uncovered various suspected stolen items, a quantity of drugs and items believed to have been used in the alleged attempted arson.

Mr Wal fronted the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday after he was charged with attempted criminal damage by fire, threat to destroy/damage property, threat to inflict serious injury, reckless conduct endangering life, making threats to kill and common law assault.

The court heard he was on bail at the time of the alleged offending.

His defence lawyer told the court his client was withdrawing from meth and would need to see a custody nurse because he is “missing a right eye”.

“It’s a pre-existing injury,” he said.

A 26-year-old-man has been interviewed by detectives but was released.

It is expected he will be charged on summons.

Mr Wal made no application for bail and was remanded in custody.

He will return to court on December 20 for a committal case conference.
