A Werribee teenager allegedly kidnapped and bashed a North Melbourne man before demanding thousands of dollars for his safe release, a court has heard.

Police allege Danyal Ghanbarzadeh, 19, and a 19-year-old Carlton man assaulted and kidnapped the man from an address in North Melbourne on July 14.

The pair allegedly took their victim, a 26-year-old man, to an address in Heidelberg where they “unlawfully imprisoned” him and allegedly demanded a $6000 ransom for his safe release.

“The 26-year-old North Melbourne man was released later that evening and had sustained minor injuries,” a police spokesman said of the incident.

The following day, police say Mr Ghanbarzadeh made threats to injure the victim, before allegedly stealing $1000 and a Toyota Camry – valued at $5000.

Detectives from the armed crime squad raided his Werribee home on August 27, allegedly seizing drugs, weapons, stolen kitchen appliances and an estimated $60,000, suspected of being the proceeds of crime.

Mr Ghanbarzadeh appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday before Magistrate Donna Bakos and was remanded in custody ahead of his next court appearance on February 11.

His alleged co-offender was arrested on November 12 in Carlton and charged over the alleged incident.

Both men are facing charges including kidnapping, extortion and false imprisonment.
