The Wyndham council election is coming up soon with many candidates putting their hands up to serve the community.
Wyndham City Council will have 11 wards with one councillor in each ward. It previously had three wards with 11 councillors in total.
All 11 sitting councillors — including mayor Jennie Barrera, deputy mayor Josh Gilligan, former mayor Susan McIntyre and Cr Jasmine Hill — have announced they will be running for next term.

Bemin Ward
Rav Sri Panditharathne
Rav Sri Panditharathne has announced he will be running for the Bemind ward in the upcoming Wyndham council elections.
Mr Panditharathne said the top three issues facing his council were high council rates, safety concerns and public transport.
“I believe in lowering rates where possible and ensuring that ratepayers get better value for the money they contribute,” he said.
“By carefully managing our budget and focusing on essential services, we can find ways to reduce unnecessary expenses and pass those savings on to residents.
“Community safety is a top priority. We need to ensure that all residents feel safe in their neighbourhoods, whether they’re at home, out for a walk, or visiting local parks.
“One of the biggest challenges residents face is the lack of convenient public transport. Wyndham has been growing rapidly, and our current infrastructure simply isn’t keeping up with demand.”
Mr Panditharathne said he was not affiliated with any political party or unions.
He is the founder of Ravs Realtors and owns Hamperor.com.au and AdagraPro.

Nusrat Islam
Nusrat Islam has announced she will be running for the Bemind ward in the upcoming Wyndham council elections.
Ms Islam is a postgraduate civil engineer with 15 years of experience in the construction industry and has worked with VicRoads and Department of Transport and Planning as a road engineer.
If elected, she has committed to advocating for reduced council rates, ensuring road safety of children at Truganina P-9 College by appointing more school crossing supervisors, advocating to install a bus shelter on Leakes Rd and supporting economic growth, among others.

Nick Ladbrooke
Nick Ladbrooke has announced he will running for the Bemin ward in the upcoming Wyndham council elections.
Mr Ladbrooke believes Wyndham’s diverse community deserves to be safe and secure.
“I am standing as a candidate for the Bemin Ward standing for an active community and a safe neighbourhood,” he said online.

Jazeer Nijamudeen
Truganina’s Jazeer Nijamudeen has put his hand up in the race for the one vacancy for the Bemind ward.
Mr Nijamudeen is a senior lawyer and community volunteer.
He said he decided to run for council because he came to a realisation his passion for volunteering and contributing to the community was because as a child he observed his father’s contagious passion for helping others with no expectation of reward.

Sadra Saeed
Sadra Saeed has announced she will be running for the Bemind ward in the upcoming Wyndham council elections.

Preet Singh
Truganina’s Preet Singh has announced he will be running for the Bemind ward in the upcoming council elections.
Mr Singh said he was deeply invested in the community’s growth and wellbeing.
“I helped to resolve the public nuisance and drinking issues at Truganina food trucks. I campaigned and advocated for a new park for Rothwell/Creekstone estate, school crossing near Haven estate and additional citizenship ceremonies to reduce waiting times.”

Ramesh Mistry Suthar
Wyndham city resident Ramiesh Mistry will be running in the upcoming local elections.
Mr Mistry said he wasn't a career politician and wasn’t “just after a role in the council”.
“I wouldn’t boast of changing the infrastructure of my ward with any false promises,” he said.
“What I would promise you are genuine and sincere efforts and handwork.
“I have lived the life as a resident of the Bemin ward and know what are the pains and issues all of you face on daily basis.”

Syeda Bahadur
Syeda Bahadur has announced she will be running for the upcoming Wyndham council elections.
Ms Bahadur said she was committed to work towards a “safer, richer, and inclusive” Bemin ward including Truganina and Laverton North.
“Together, we can create a community where everyone feels secure, opportunities are abundant, and diversity is celebrated,” she said.
“Your support means everything to me, and I am dedicated to representing your interests and bringing positive change to our ward.”

Geet Gaba has put her hand up for the Bemin ward in the October Wyndham elections.
Ms Gaba said the three key issues impacting her council were crime and anti-social behaviour, youth safety, public space safety and also (rubbish dumping).
She said she had no affiliations with any political party or unions and lives in the Bemin ward.

Raheem A. Rifai
Raheem A. Rifai will be running for the Brinbeal ward in the upcoming elections.
Mr Rifai has been a community volunteer, unionist and social entrepreneur for more than 30 years.
He said if elected he would build Wyndham city’s entrepreneurship incubator, prioritise community safety by calling for more police resources, strengthen local community connection in Tarneit and advocate for a dedicated university campus in 1160 Sayers Rd, Tarneit.

Robert Szatkowski
Sitting councillor Robert Szatkowski will be running for another term in the Brinbeal ward.
Mr Szatkowski said he was eager to continue serving the community.
“This election, I’ve embraced three core values: commitment, compassion️, and integrity️,” he said.
Mr Szatkowski said he would prioritise improved online access, shorter phone hold times and SMS hotlines because “ratepayers and residents deserve faster service”.

Rishi Prabhakar
Rishi Prabhakar will be running for the Brinbeal ward.
Mr Prabhakar said he believed every resident deserved access to inclusive and well-maintained recreational and sporting areas.
“I am deeply committed to expanding our parks, upgrading sports facilities, and creating welcoming community spaces where people of all ages and abilities can come together.”

Ian Devapura
Victorian Socialist’s endorsed candidate — Ian Devapura will be running for Brinbeal ward this upcoming election.
Mr Devapura said he believed local councils should fight for the interests of working-class people instead of “serving the interests of big business and the super-rich”.
“I’ve been a community organiser and activist that’s been involved in campaigns against racism and fascism,” he said.
“In recent times, I’ve campaigned in solidarity with the people of Palestine and against Israel’s war in Gaza. I believe councils should be a place where questions of social justice are raised and acted on.”

Aijaz Moinuddin
Aijaz Moinuddin has put his hand up for the upcoming council election for Brinbeal ward.
Mr Moinuddin said he was eager to serve as the community’s “voice and advocate for positive change”.
“My campaign is centred around leadership and data-driven strategies I want to make Wyndham a welcoming and smart city.
“I’ll prioritise safety, transportation improvements, and environmental quality, I will focus on initiatives to boost our economy, enhance education, and create more jobs in an eco-friendly city.”

Kishaun Thiruchelvam will be running for the Brinbeal ward.
Mr Thiruchelvam is a biomedicine honours student studying to become a GP.
He said he knew the power of accessing proper healthcare and education in “unlocking the potential of a better life for you and your family”.
“This is the sort of thinking I’ll bring to Wyndham City Council,” he said.
“I’ve got a plan to hold developers to account, back an innovative health services model for Wyndham North as part of delivering a better future for you and your family.”

Cheetham Ward
Emi Neville, Greens
Emi Neville is the Greens-endorsed candidate for the Cheetham ward.
Ms Neville is a queer person and a high school mathematics teacher living in Wyndham and working at a local public school.
“I love living in this diverse, vibrant community. We have so many opportunities to make Wyndham a place where people can connect, socialise and thrive,” she said.
“I will advocate for high-quality public transport to address traffic congestion.
“Our community is struggling with the housing and cost of living crises.”
Ms Neville said the three issues impacting her council were managing traffic, increasing public facilities resources, and building the community.
Ms Neville said she was a member of the Australian Greens Victoria and is a member of the Australian Education Union.
She lives in Cheetham ward.
Susan McIntyre
Point Cook resident and sitting councillor Susan McIntyre has announced she will be running for the Cheetham Ward, rather than her current Harrison Ward.
Ms McIntyre said serving her community had been a “true honour and privilege”, and she was “eager to continue this work”.
“After speaking with my family I am pleased to announce my candidacy for the upcoming council elections for Cheetham ward,” she said.
“In the meantime, I will remain dedicated to representing Harrison ward to the best of my ability.”

Kamran Javed
Kamran Javed has registered to run for the Cheetam ward in the upcoming council elections.
Mr Javed said the three key issues impacting his council were security, school parking, and road and infrastructure.
Mr Javed said he had no political party affiliations and was not part of any unions.
Mr Javed has been living in the Cheetam wards for 10 years and also ran last election.
Satnam Singh
Satnam Singh has registered to run for the Cheetam ward in the upcoming Wyndham elections.

Shyam Viswanathan
Shyam Viswanathan has registered to run for the Cheetam ward in the upcoming Wyndham elections.
Mr Viswanathan said the three issues facing the council were crime, traffic congestion and infrastructure.
Mr Viswanathan said he was a member of the Liberal Party. He did not specify if he was a member of any union.
Mr Viswanathan lives in the ward he is running for.
Angela Newhouse
Angela Newhouse has registered to run for the Cheetam ward in the upcoming Wyndham elections.
Ms Newhouse said the three keys issues impacting the council were the East Werribee Precinct, not enough schools particularly in Point Cook, and Point Cook Rd being the worst road in Victoria for gridlock.
Ms Newhouse said “the only solution is to duplicate Point Cook Rd between Sneydes Rd and Dunnings Rd, and then from Dunnings Rd to Central Ave”.
She also said the state government’s promise of building a P-9 School in Point Cook South in 2026 “won’t even accommodate the population increase between now and then”.
“Never mind the current chronic conditions with multistorey school portables going up in car parks and on ovals. The first building granted planning approval in the East Werribee Precinct should be a P-12 School,” she said.
Ms Newhouse said she was a member of the Liberal Party but resigned in November 2022.
She was the Liberal candidate for Point Cook in the 2022 state elections.
Ms Newhouse lives and works as a schoolteacher in the ward she is running for.
Featherbrook Ward
Raja Reddy
Raja Reddy will be running for council in the Featherbrook Ward.
Mr Reddy said even though he had a double masters and experience as a network engineer, he was forced to choose a career as a registered migration agent because of the challenges he faced during his journey.
“As a volunteer and registered migration agent, I provided immigration assistance, supporting thousands of people. I also organised online events that engaged kids and families in recreational activities across Australia and New Zealand,” he said.
Mr Reddy is the president of the Telugu Association of Australia and said his proudest achievement was advocating for the inclusion of Telugu in NAATI.
“As your councillor, I will focus on building a better community together,” he said.

Hasan Naim
Point Cook resident Hasan Naim will run for the Featherbrook ward in the upcoming elections.
Mr Naim owns and runs a medical clinic and pharmaceutical company in Point Cook.
He is the president of Wyndham Volunteer Association, vice president of UMRA, an adviser at RAC of Victorian Multicultural Commission and was the former vice president of Point Cook Action Group.
Mr Naim said he was passionate about enhancing the community and would work “tirelessly to achieve those goals”.
“Our support is crucial, and I cannot win the election without it … together, we can make a real difference,” he said.

Arthur Fernandes
Arthur Fernandes has announced he will run for the Featherbrook ward in the upcoming elections.

Anees Rehman, Greens
Greens-backed Aneez Rehman will be running for the Featherbrook ward in the upcoming elections.
Mr Rehman is a Point Cook local, father, husband, engineer and said he was passionate about social, economic and environmental equality.
“I will stand up for the needs of residents, not corporations or property developers by increasing transparency and planning for long-term sustainability,” he said.
He said Wyndham residents had been “neglected by all levels of government”.
“We are experiencing inadequate public transport, a lack of vibrant parks, poor planning of housing and lack of focus on the mental and physical well being of the residents.
“We need progressive voices on council who will stand up for the issues that matter.”

Kelvin Small
Kelvin Small will be running for the upcoming council elections for the Featherbrook ward.
Mr Small is a youth worker and has worked in the public sector for more than 30 years.

Tully Smith has put this hand up for the Featherbrook ward.
Mr Smith said he wanted to address cost of living.
“We are in the midst of a cost of living crisis, to truly address this issue all levels of government must work together,” he said.
Mr Smith said the three issues facing the council were cost of living, rapid growth and infrastructure not keeping up and creating a liveable community.
Mr Smith said he was a proud member of the Australian Labor Party since the age of four in 1999.
He did not specify if he was a member of any unions.

Tony Hooper
Tony Hooper has registered to run for the Featherbrook ward in the upcoming Wyndham council elections.
Mr Hooper said the three issues facing the council were public safety, roads such as Point Cook Rd that “have been identified as insufficient for its use” and public transport “which still presents issues in moving people across Wyndham”.
Mr Hooper said he was not affiliated with any political party but was a member of the Liberal Party 15 years ago.
He is a member of the MEAA union.
Mr Hooper lives in the ward he is running for council in.
Jasmine Hill

Tushar Kumar
Tushar Kumar has announced he will be running for the Grange ward in the upcoming Wyndham council elections.
Mr Kumar said he was an independent candidate with no political party affiliations.
“My focus is on representing the community without the influence of party politics,” he said.

Mr Kumar said he has lived in the Grange ward for a long time, giving him “a deep understanding of the community’s needs and the areas where we can improve”.

Victorian Socialist’s endorsed Beth Jackson will be running for upcoming elections in the Grange ward.
Ms Jackson is a Deakin University student who is running in council election because she believed Wyndham residents “deserve better”.
“I’ve been a community organiser and activist for almost a decade. I’ve been involved in campaigns for free education, public housing, against racism and for action on climate change.”
She said councils should be a place where questions of social justice are raised and acted on.
“In recent times, I’ve campaigned in solidarity with the people of Palestine against Israel’s genocide in Gaza,” she said.

Malik Ahmad
Malik Ahmad is running for the Grange ward in upcoming elections.
He is an engineer, estimator, educator, builder limited, licensed estate agent.

His target goals are to support, maintain and improve community service programs.

Sophie Melham
Sophie Melham will be running for the upcoming election in the Grange ward.
Ms Melhem said she was “deeply committed” to serving the community and working towards a better future.
“I am running for council because I believe that our community deserves strong and effective leadership that is dedicated to addressing the needs and concerns of its residents,” she said.
“As your council member, I will prioritise transparency, accountability, and accessibility in all of my actions and decisions.”
Ms Melhem’s passions are improving local infrastructure, promoting economic development, and ensuring schools and public services are of the highest quality.

Marcel Mahfoud
Sitting councillor Marcel Mahfoud will be running for the Grange ward in next term.
Mr Mahfoud said it had been “an absolute honour” to serve the Wyndham community for the past four years and wanted to continue the service for another four years.
Mr Mahfoud said the three issues impacting the council were growth, balancing the need of all areas, and financing the “massive” infrastructure needs of the community.
“The main issue impacting our council is growth. As our municipality grows the needs of the community grows,” he said.
“Another issue is balancing the needs of the older areas and the new. There isn’t enough funds for neighbourhood renewal as the needs to cater to the growing community are huge.
“We also have a problem with financing the massive infrastructure needs of our community. As our area grows from rural to urban the needs are great; road upgrades, new community centres, sports grounds & pavilions, parks & open space and other community facilities to name a few.”
Mr Mahfoud said he was not a member of any political party or unions.
He was a member of the Labor Party but was expelled in 2012 when he refused “to be a supported candidate”.
“I don’t believe that party politics belong in local government,” he said.

Melba Cabato Waugh
Melba Cabato Waugh is running for the Grange ward in the upcoming election.
Ms Waugh is the Australia Post licensee of North Geelong and Bacchus Marsh Post Offices.
She is also the president of Bridge Builders for Australasia Inc and president for the Australian Council for Multicultural Entrepreneurs.

Ms Barrera said she was seeking a re-election for the new Heathdale ward.

Jack Boddeke
Greens-endorsed Jack Boddeke will be running for the Heathdale ward.
Mr Boddeke, a Werribee local, is a IT professional who is passionate about providing Werribee locals “with a representative that understands the needs of the community”.
He cares about making housing fair and affordable for everyone, pushing for action on the climate crisis, getting “out of dirty coal and gas”, and ensuring any local development considers the impact to areas like the Werribee River.
“I have lived in Werribee most of my life, growing up in a single-income family in public housing, and now I rent locally,” she said.
“I’m keenly aware of the current housing affordability crisis, which is supercharged by Labor putting their property developer mates ahead of the needs of everyday people.”
Mr Boddeke said the three issues impacting the council were traffic congestion, the cost of living, and the housing crisis.
Mr Boddeke said he had been a member of the Greens for five years.
He is a member of the National Tertiary Education Union and of the Renters and Housing Union.
He lives in the ward he is running for.
“My grandparents, mum, and I all grew up in the ward, and I feel connected to the area and proud to live here,” he said.
Andrew Elsbury
Former member of the Victorian parliament and community volunteer Andrew Elsbury will be running for the Heathdale vacancy at the 2024 Wyndham council elections.
Wyndham resident of many years, Mr Elsbury had been heavily involved in community life by volunteering for organisations like the Werribee Football Club, Leukaemia Foundation, Clean Up Australia Day and the Woodville Residents Facebook page.
“I am determined to make our community the best it can be and that is why I have volunteered my time in many roles across different organisations,” he said.
“Seeking to enter Wyndham Council furthers my desire to serve this community by working to improve job opportunities, manage council spending and supporting local community organisations.”
Mr Elsbury said the top three issues facing the council were roads, planning and jobs.
“Both state and council managed roads need a great deal of work. As a growth suburb, Wyndham is struggling to keep pace with the commuter and commercial traffic generated by the ever increasing population,” he said.
“Childcare centres with inadequate parking, petrol stations build in long established residential areas and monolithic rooming houses overlooking neighbouring properties are a few of the issues from the Heathdale ward alone.”
He also said council had role to play in promoting Wyndham as a place business could be established.
“This includes the promotion of the Werribee Town Centre with the redevelopments this project entails as well as seeking movement on the Werribee East Employment Precinct. “Wyndham is well placed for business with proximity to two airports, major rail infrastructure, freeways and short drives to Melbourne and Geelong”.
Mr Elsbury said he was not affiliated with any political party but was a member of the Liberal Party for about 25 years and a member for the Western Metropolitan Region from 2010-2014.
“I left the party when Moira Deeming was selected to be the candidate for Western Metro in 2022,” he said.
Mr Elsbury said he did not live in the ward he was contesting but had lived there for more than eight years before moving.
Iramoo Ward
Prashant Tandon
Werribee’s Prashant Tandon will be competing for the Iramoo ward in the upcoming Wyndham elections.
Mr Tandon has worked at Westpac Bank, in Optus Telecommunications and completed his Masters in Business Administration in Hawthorn’s Swinburne University and is also pursuing a Diploma in financial planning.
He said working in business allowed him to apply his skills in a dynamic and hands-on environment.
“Balancing these roles has been both challenging and rewarding, and I am passionate about leveraging my diverse experiences to make a meaningful impact in my community,” he said.
“Having spent over 15 years in the west, I can say that this community has been a source of strength and inspiration for me.
“The connections I have here inspire me to give back and stay engaged and contribute to this diverse and growing community.”

Nurul Khan
Nurul Khan is running for the Iramoo ward in the upcoming Wyndham elections.
Mr Khan said if elected, he will fight for freezing rates for at least one year to help ease the financial burden on our community.
“With the cost of living on the rise, it’s essential that we need to prioritise and take action to support families and small businesses,” he said.
“Freezing rates will provide immediate relief, allowing you to focus on what matters most.”

Monica Raizada
Monica Raizada has put her hand up in the upcoming elections for the Imaroo ward.
Ms Raizada said if elected she would bring a wealth of experience in community service, having held positions such as the president of Women of Wyndham, chair of the Wyndham Interfaith Network, and founding director of Vedic Global and Multicultural Women of the World.
She has also held roles as a state school teacher, an economics lecturer, a counsellor, and a business development manager in the banking sector.
“I am now eager to bring my passion and experience to local government, where I can further my vision of enhancing the wellbeing of our community with all your support and best wishes,” Ms Raizada said.

She has been involved with working with residents with Mental Health issues, raised $150,000 for Prevention of Youth Suicide and Mental Health Organisations, Creating pathways for students’ future careers in the fashion industry and working with the Diwali Festival Committee.
“During the last state election, I worked with treasurer Tim Pallas MP to secure his pledge of $5m traffic study and long term planning to reduce chronic traffic congestion throughout Wyndham and $120m for the upgrade of the intersection in Ballan Road, Werribee,” she said.
Ms Marcus said the top three issues facing the Werribee Park ward were road and congestion, value for rates and community services.

Dr An said the three issues facing the council were crime, lack of community facilities and needing better public transport.
“Wyndham is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Australia, and Williams Landing Ward is the gateway of this fast-growing corridor,” he said.
