Avondale Heights makes it 10 from 10 in EDFL Premier Division with thumping of Maribyrnong Park

THE  winning streak reached double figures for Avondale Heights on Saturday but coach Saade Ghazi says his side is not getting ahead of itself just yet.

THE  winning streak reached double figures for Avondale Heights on Saturday but coach Saade Ghazi says his side is not getting ahead of itself as it eyes a big two weeks against last year’s two grand finalists.

The Heights took down Maribyrnong Park with ease to record their 10th win on the trot, powering to a 20.11 (131) to 8.13 (61) win in Essendon District Football League Premier Division.

Highlighting the significant improvement the side has made this year, the Heights had a 6-4 record at the same time last season.

“Did we expect to be 10-0? Probably not,” Ghazi said.

“It’s been good so far but there’s a long way to go.”

The latest success was spearheaded by Heights forward Patrick Rose, the former VFL star booting 10 majors to bring up 50 goals for the season.

Former Port Melbourne teammate Dean Galea was also good but was not as accurate in front of the sticks, finishing with 3.5 to make it 41 goals for the year.

While their top-of-the-table position has the Heights as the team to beat, Ghazi said the next fortnight would be huge for his side.

The Heights will face reigning premier Greenvale in a blockbuster clash on Saturday before tackling fellow 2013 grand finalist Aberfeldie next weekend.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge. They (Greenvale) have won the last five or six but we’ve won the last 10,” Ghazi said.

Elsewhere, Aberfeldie coughed up a 26-point half-time lead to go down to Greenvale by nine points.

Keilor got over the line against Airport West by six points despite Marcus Kenny booting eight goals for the Eagles, Strathmore took down Essendon Doutta Stars by 17 points and Northern Saints beat Pascoe Vale by 29 points.
