An explosion at a Catholic high school in Camperdown has injured two Year 8 students.

Paramedics were called to Mercy Regional College just before 12.10pm, with some reports saying the explosion involved a fuelled camp cooking device.

The students were preparing their Year 8 camp equipment for next week when the incident occurred.

A boy in his early teens suffered burns to his lower body and was taken to the Warrnambool Public Hospital in a stable condition.

A second boy, also in his early teens, sustained an injury to his upper body and was also taken to the Warrnambool Public Hospital in a stable condition.

Both were discharged by Thursday evening.

The Mercy Regional College and St Patrick’s Primary School staff, Emergency Services personnel, and Warrnambool Base Hospital staff’s prompt and professional response is greatly appreciated by the College, principal Sharon Gillett said in a statement.

“The safety and wellbeing of our students is our highest priority. Other students in the class witnessed the incident and were supported by staff members on the scene,” she said.

“Counsellors and the Wellbeing Team will offer support to those affected over the coming days. All families have been notified.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the students, families and staff impacted by this accident.”
