The Warrnambool community has stopped and remembered those who served in a moving Remembrance Day service.
Dozens of people paid their respects at the town’s war memorial.
Warrnambool RSL president Michael Bellamy spoke at the service.
“Remembrance Day for everyone is a uniquely personal experience, and will conjure different thoughts and emotions in everyone, whether you have served or not,” he said.
“This ceremony today is simple, quiet and reflective. The spirit of mateship lives here.”
The First World War was the most destructive conflict in its time to be experienced by humanity, Mr Bellamy said.
“When it began in August 1914, a few imagined the course that it would take or foresaw its terrible toll,” he said.
“More than 60,000 Australians lost their lives, in what was then called the Great War.
“To remember and express our gratitude to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice and to those that have served and are also serving today in our nation’s defence.”
The members of the 143 Squadron Australian Air Force were proud and honoured to attend the first in-person service since 2019 and show their support.
