New dedicated daily news service The Warrnambool News launches

Welcome to The Warrnambool News — a new digital masthead dedicated to delivering the stories that matter to your community.

For the first time in its history, News Corp and heraldsun.com.au will have a presence in Warrnambool with the launch of a dedicated daily online news service.

The Warrnambool News will deliver the stories that matter most, recognising the undeniable role the region plays in tourism, food, wine and sport across Victoria.

A subscription to The Warrnambool News not only gives you access to breaking news and coverage of local issues, but also trusted journalism from heraldsun.com.au, national sport and news and access to The Daily Telegraph, The Courier-Mail, The Advertiser and the Hobart Mercury.

The Warrnambool News’ first reporter Simon Cameron joins the team after working as a journalist for almost 30 years on regional and metropolitan newspapers across Australia including the Cairns Post, Adelaide Advertiser and most recently as deputy editor of the Sunraysia Daily in Mildura.

Mr Cameron grew up in Victoria’s southwest and said he was excited to return to his roots and cover courts, council, politics and local sport.

“I started my career in Warrnambool, having been born and bred in the southwest. I am returning to the city after 25 years away and am excited to be home,” he said.

“There are so many stories to tell in our beautiful part of the world, and I can’t wait to hit the ground running to bring you the news from across our region.”

The Herald Sun editor Sam Weir said there was never a more important time to be expanding coverage of regional Victoria.

“Local journalism is essential and it’s great to be expanding our coverage of Victoria with new digital mastheads,’’ he said.

“The Warrnambool News will deliver trusted news from dedicated journalists reporting on the issues that really matter to the community.

“Readers across Victoria have engaged with our reporters and seen the value in subscribing to our regional mastheads to help support sustainable local journalism.’’

It follows the successful launch of other digital-only news services throughout regional Victoria – including The Bendigo News, The Ballarat News, The Goulburn Valley News and The Bass Coast News.

These titles form part of News Corp Australia’s community and regional network, which is committed to telling the stories of suburban and rural life.

News Corp’s national community masthead network editor John McGourty said The Warrnambool News aimed to “bring our brand of high-quality local news and show true commitment to the local community by writing the sorts of stories that reflect their everyday lives, ambitions and concerns”.

The past 12 months has shown a sense of community has never been more important than it is right now in Australia,” he said.

“Having a strong editorial presence in every community across the country is our ambition and we are identifying gaps in areas we think people are looking for trusted news.

“We are employing more journalists to write for communities at a local level about the things that matter most to them.”
