An ammonia gas leak has occurred at a local store in Colac.
Colac Police, CFA and Lara FRV Station 6 were called to Regal Cream Products on Murray St just after 10pm on Monday night, where the road was closed off.
About five fire trucks arrived at the location where CFA personnel responded to the incident.
A Colac CFA spokesperson said the leak appeared to be under control despite the risks of the exposure.
“The problem is they have a coil of about 100m of ammonia sitting on top of the coil room where the leak was, and that’s probably what the issue is at the moment. We believe there are readings of 300 parts per million, which is a danger to life,” the CFA spokesperson said.
“It’s in the roofspace so there’s not a lot of air flow and the only way to get rid of it is evaporation which could take a day or a couple of hours.”
Low wind caused the gas to remain in the area of the leak, according to the CFA.
The CFA have also advised any residents nearby the hazard area to try and stay indoors for their own safety.
