A playground upgrade a local council approved to go ahead appears to have backfired after multiple injuries were reported on the 9m slide.

The new $1.8m Lake Pertobe playground in Warrnambool opened less than a week ago but already multiple horrific injuries have occurred.

A video was posted to social media of a young teen flying down the slide, with his leg bent upwards.

“My leg is broken, ambulance now please. I’m serious”, he says, urging his friends to stop filming.

Posting to Facebook, the teen commented he would most likely need surgery and would have a splint on for six weeks minimum.

Meanwhile, in a separate video, a little girl is propelled off the slide, face-planting into the ground, after gathering too much speed on her downwards journey.

Lilly Steer commented on Warrnambool City Council’s Facebook post saying another girl went down the slide arms first and was going “so fast that her arm got stuck behind one of the poles at the bottom and it completely bent her arm back”.

There was also another report of a child breaking their collarbone on the slide.

A spokesman said the council had received reports of the accidents at the new playground, including the young teen who badly injured his leg.

“The circumstances that led to this injury will be considered and we wish the young man a full and swift recovery,” he said.

“We encourage all adults, including parents and carers, to make considered decisions when using the slide, or allowing children to use the slide.”

The spokesman said the playground facilities — including the slide, flying fox and skate park — should only be used during daylight hours, and a sign has been installed reminding community users how to enjoy the slide safely.
