More than 5000 Warrnambool residents have objected to the relocation of a popular art gallery.
Despite council staff‘s advice, Warrnambool councillors decided to move forward with a $50m idea to move the Warrnambool Art Gallery from its Liebig St location to Cannon Hill.
They commissioned a business study at their August meeting.
But locals are furious at the idea, saying the proposed Cannon Hill site — which is also used for a war memorial — should remain public parkland, with more than 5000 people signing an online and hard copy petition.
“Keeping open green spaces is an important part of Warrnambool’s attraction for residents and visitors. A great view to boot,” a petition signer said.
Warrnambool councillors will received the petition at Monday night’s council meeting.
In August, councillors said the current gallery had limited operational flexibility and small opportunity to present larger art exhibitions and to provide social and engaging spaces for activity.
To get the floor area and space required, the gallery on this site would need to be multi-level, councillors said.
