A senior sergeant died by suicide at a police station in Melbourne’s southeast on Friday night.

Colleagues found the man’s body at Moorabbin Police Station about 7.30pm.

Victoria Police reported with “great sadness” that the police member had taken his own life.

“The exact circumstances are being investigated but the death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage,” a Victoria Police spokesman said.

It is understood the officer was not on duty at the time.

Victoria Police Sergeant Glenn Holland, who runs police welfare group Protecting the Protectors, said it was a sad day for the force.

Sergeant Holland campaigns for enhanced mental health outcomes among police officers.

“It is with great sadness that the #fightingptsdvicpol campaign was advised that one of our police members took his own life yesterday,” Sergeant Holland wrote online.

“To the family, friends and my colleagues we wish our sincere condolences in this truly sad time.

“It is time we start asking the hard questions to our mates: are you OK?”

The Police Association of Victoria said anyone who needed help should seek help.

In a statement, the union said: “We can confirm reports of a non-operational incident that occurred at the Moorabbin police station yesterday where a police member has sadly passed away“.

“Our thoughts are with the family and close colleagues of the deceased member who will be supported by The Police Association and Victoria Police during this difficult time.”

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
