Commuter chaos has engulfed Melbourne after five train lines were delayed and two separate fires closed city roads and a freeway in the southeast.
The transport nightmare began when scheduled works on the Sandringham, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines ran late creating delays to peak hour services.
Northern train lines, including the Upfield and Craigieburn lines have also been hit with cancellations but the reason for the issue has not yet been revealed.
Passengers on the Craigieburn line reported being stuck unable to board already-full trains by the time they arrived at their station.
On the Sunbury line, Metro Trains reported an ongoing police request in the Watergardens area had caused major delays, with trains holding at available platforms about 8am.
Motorists travelling into the city were also stuck after a car fire closed city bound lanes of the major freeway at Seaford near Frankston-Dandenong Rd about 8.30am on Monday.
A Department of Transport spokesman said extra buses had been scheduled to supplement train services.
“Transport Victoria thanks passengers for their patience as crews worked to complete works and safely restore services,” he said.
“We ask passengers to check station platform displays, listen for announcements, and to allow up to 40 minutes extra for their journey as trains get back into position for the normal timetable.”
The Department of Transport was contacted for comment.
