WOODEND-HESKET overcame a goal-less opening quarter against Wallan to record consecutive Riddell District Football League wins for the first time in four years on Saturday.

The Hawks got an almighty bake from coach Ross Sleight at quarter-time after conceding six goals to trail by 37 points at Romsey Park.

Woodend-Hesket still had plenty to do at half-time, trailing by 34 points.

But the hosts drew on all their reserves in the third term, keeping Wallan scoreless and piling on six majors to draw within seven points.

The scene was set for the Hawks to soar with momentum and they delivered an emphatic finish.

With their defence standing tall, three goals was enough for Woodend-Hesket to run out 12.7 (79) to 11.6 (72) winners and taste victory for the second-week running.

“It was a very, very ordinary start,” Sleight said.

“But the last half was the way we should have played the first half and we got over the top.

“(We were) just very flat-footed at the start, it was a perfect day for footy.

“The boys just didn’t come to play in that first half.”

Carl Rodger produced a tireless performance in the come-from-behind win, while Ethan Gove, Jesse Waters and Ben Toman performed strongly.

“Woodend, we haven’t won two on the trot in the last four years,” Sleight said.

“It was a bit of history, the boys were all rapt.

“All the sponsors and that got there, it would have been good to watch for them, after half-time anyway.”

In other results, Diggers Rest led at every change in a 16.19 (115) to 14.8 (92) triumph over Lancefield.

Jon Kent continued his outstanding campaign with six goals, but it was not enough to lift the Tigers to victory as Jason Williams helped the Burras secure the points.

Elsewhere, Sunbury Kangaroos claimed their seventh win in eight matches with a thrilling three-point victory over Broadford, while Romsey, Riddell and Macedon flexed their respective muscle in comfortable wins.

The Redbacks, Cats and Kangaroos lead the table after eight rounds, with Macedon travelling to Romsey for a blockbuster clash this weekend.
