Victorian Premier Cricket continues to produce outstanding cricket.

From Melbourne’s stand-in skipper’s fairytale century to a young spinner claiming his maiden five-wicket haul.

The selection panel at Leader Local Sport has come together and picked the Team of the Week in Victoria’s pre-eminent cricket competition.

After rousing wins in Round 3 Melbourne, St Kilda and Geelong share the spoils with two players selected while Northcote, Melbourne University, Prahran, Carlton, Casey South Melbourne and Dandenong also feature.

Mark Phelan (Northcote)

Backing up his first half-century in 12 months, Phelan scored is first century in two years against Fitzroy Doncaster. The stylish opening batsman cracked 10 boundaries and three sixes in his 135-ball 115. A second straight half-century opening stand with Solomon Mire is more good news for Northcote.

Brayden Stepien (Carlton)

The Carlton wicketkeeper-batsman continued his red-hot from with a typically aggressive 88 from 87 balls against Footscray, hitting 11 boundaries and a pair of sixes in his team’s eight-wicket win. Stepien has 295 runs to his name this season at an eye-popping average of 147.5 and is set to feature regularly in this team in coming months.

Ashley Chandrasinge (Casey-South Melbourne)

The budding young star is starting to heat up with a 70 and unbeaten 98 in consecutive weeks. Chandrasinghe fell agonisingly short of triple figures on Saturday as he helped the Swans chase down Frankston Peninsula’s 199 with five wickets in hand. The opening batsman hit eight boundaries and a six in his 132-ball knock and sits third on the competition’s runs chart.

Blake Thomson (Melbourne)

Making his captaincy debut, Thomson produced a fairytale century. A captain’s knock if you will. The Demons opener scored an even 100, with eight boundaries, his sixth First XI ton. A 135-run opening stand with Meyrick Buchanan set up Melbourne’s 9-247 and a big win over Kingston Hawthorn.

Angus Boyd (Geelong)

It was a frustrating wait for the Geelong batsman, but Boyd reached his maiden century at First XI level on Saturday as he put Greenvale Kangaroos’ bowlers to the sword. The 22-year-old bludgeoned eight sixes in an even 100 from 74 balls, with his team prevailing in emphatic fashion by 138 runs.

Michael De Iacovo (St Kilda)

De Iacovo posted his maiden First XI century in style, blasting 136 from 114 balls in an innings that featured half-a-dozen sixes. He has been in and out of St Kilda’s First XI during his four years due to the club’s array of state batting talent but seized his opportunity against Ringwood with a classy hand.

Hayden Butterworth (Geelong)

While he adds plenty of batting strength to this side, Butterworth has been selected on the back of his bowling heroics against Greenvale, with the spinner collecting 4-19 from nine frugal overs. A member of the Premier Cricket Team of the Year last season after logging 432 runs and 29 wickets,

Henry Thornton (St Kilda)

Thornton must be loving life at the moment, given the freedom to attack with the ball after St Kilda’s bats have piled up huge totals. The Saints paceman had 320 runs up his sleeve on Saturday and proceeded to knock off Ringwood dangermen Tom Rogers for a duck and David King for one and finished with 4-15.

Kieran Elliott (Melbourne)

After his skipper had set the match up with the bat, Elliott ensured Kingston Hawthorn were never in the hunt. The Demons paceman trapped Romain Grenville and bowled Visura Fernando to have the Hawks in early trouble and then returned to clean up the tail for figures of 4-27.

Blake Parsons (Prahran)

The True Blues spinner ripped through the Camberwell batting order to collect competition-best figures of 5-37. It was Parsons’ maiden First XI five-wicket haul and best bowling figures of his Prahran career. He dismissed four of the Magpies’ top six and was on a hat-trick with his fourth scalp but was denied.

Ben Rolfs (Melbourne University)

The leg-spinner started the season in the Second XI, but he bamboozled Essendon to return 4-16 from eight immaculate overs in the absence of BBL man Fawad Ahmed. He combined with left-arm orthodox tweaker James Bett (3-11 from 9.2) to destroy the Dons as the Students cruised to an eight-wicket victory.

Brett Forsyth (Dandenong) – 12th man

Deserved a place in the XI after a match-winning knock, but was ultimately squeezed out and made 12th man because of the surplus of opening batsmen. The Ryder medallist has made much higher scores than the weekend’s 52 not out against Richmond, but it was a vital contribution in Dandenong’s three-wicket win, with only two other players making more than 20 in the match.
