Williamstown lost its last five wickets for just three runs on Saturday as Oakleigh assumed control of the first versus third VSDCA clash in the final hour.

Matthew Twentyman (44) and Brenton Hodges (45) had the Seagulls surging towards 200, rescuing their side from 5-61 after the pace attack of Alex Jones, Jeremy Devlin and Michael Splatt cut through the top order.

The Twentyman-Hodges stand added 101 for the sixth wicket but Williamstown then lost 4-0 to collapse to 9-162 and was all out for 165.

Splatt grabbed 5-33 from 13.1 overs, Jones toiled through 25 overs to return 3-45 and Devlin applied relentless pressure with 2-19 from 13 overs.

“He (Splatt) has been threatening to do that for a while now with the ball and he got the reward for effort on Saturday,” Oaks captain Brendan McGuinness said.

“For me, probably the pick of the bowlers was Jeremy Devlin. He bowled with pace, he bowled a consistent line and length all day and was beating the bat constantly.

“I’m very happy with the bowling unit at the moment, they’re doing some very good work.”

Andrew Splatt finished unbeaten on 16 with brother Michael (0 not out) up the other end as Oakleigh reached 0-21 by stumps.

McGuinness said his side was well placed to record its sixth win.

“Twentyman and Hodges batted really well just to grind out a partnership and our bowlers were brilliant all day and despite bowling consistent line and length, just didn’t get the reward for effort,” he said.

“We were really disciplined across the board, managed to get a couple of edges and took care of it from there.

“(It was a) bizarre (finish) but I would have been really disappointed had we put in that sort of performance and ended up having to chase 240-plus.”

Meanwhile, Oakleigh’s pair Kishan Sudeep and Dharmesh Patel broke the club record for the Fourth XI opening-wicket partnership with an unbroken 271-run stand against Elsternwick in Round 6.

Both Sudeep (128 not out) and Patel (123 not out) hit centuries in the total of 0-271 off 40 overs.

Elsty was bowled out for 105 in 38.5 overs as the Oaks recorded a 166-run win.
