VSDCA: Moorabbin beats Elsternwick in north-south section

It was maidens and mayhem as Moorabbin tore through Elsternwick in a stunning day of Subbies action.

A dynamic bowling performance gave Moorabbin its sixth win of the season in VSDCA north-south section on Saturday.

The Binners, with 190 on the board, squeezed the life out of Elsternwick, which was always on the back foot after losing four early wickets and was dismissed for 121.

Damsara Menuwara put Moorabbin on top when he struck three times in succession to have Elsty reeling at 4-26.

Roshan Livera sent down an astonishing 14 maidens to finish with the brilliant figures of 2-36 off 27 overs.

Moorabbin skipper Renaldi Dias took the final five wickets to walk off with a career-best 5-29 off 17 overs.

A defiant Kalhan Sineth top scored for Elsternwick with an unbeaten 38 off 138 balls.

The defeat was a bitter blow to Elsternwick’s finals hopes; Elsty slipped out of the top six with one round remaining.

Caulfield easily accounted for Preston, but the Fielders’ bid for outright points fell short.

Resuming on 3-92 chasing 113, the Fielders quickly banked first innings points and pushed on to 5-203 declared.

Sam Smith hit the ball crisply to finish undefeated on 62 off 59 balls (6 fours, 2 sixes).

Put back in, Preston lost both openers for ducks to crash to 2-4 as Andrew King and Oliver Hayes struck, but recovered to reach 6-107 off 28 overs when players shook hands.

Caulfield coach Lachie Graf again impressed, snaring 3-30.

Brighton skipper Peter Cassidy took his fourth five-wicket haul of the season to dismantle Ormond.

Cassidy took 5-52 off 16.5 overs, boosting his season tally to 35 wickets, as Ormond was dismissed for 122 in reply to 224.

Glen Parker shared the new ball with Cassidy and also impressed, taking 2-22 off 13 overs.

Ormond’s top scorer was opener Ben Speake, with 29.

Brunswick edged Oakleigh by a run in an extraordinary match, highlighted by two stunning individual performances.

Wickers paceman Matt Doric captured 9-95 from a marathon 37.5 overs, including the last wicket to give his side a gripping win by the narrowest margin.

Oakleigh gun Brendan McGuinness made a gallant bid for victory with a superb, unbeaten 104 off 105 balls. Jack Clark gave support with 56.
