BAYSWATER coach Jason Kilby is confident his latest additions can help the club climb the ladder – spearheaded by a boost to the fast-bowling stocks.
The Waters finished last season in 15th spot of the East-West group’s 16 teams, chalking up just two wins.
But Kilby said the recent signings of ex-Premier quicks Thomas and Julian Packer are cause for optimism, with the pair previously plying their trade at Casey-South Melbourne.
Thomas, touted for his “raw pace” and ability as a right-hand batsman, played across the grades at the Swans and Carlton collecting 61 wickets and a best of 5-10.
Left-arm seam bowler Julian took 55 wickets playing predominantly in the Swans’ Second XI, and brings high hopes as a lower-order batsman.
The duo links up with close friend Sachin Halangode at the club.
“We identified that we have a lot of young, talented pace-bowlers … but probably weren’t at that First XI level yet,” Kilby said.
“We wanted to add to our depth … our No. 1 priority over the pre-season was to improve those fast-bowling stocks, and get a couple of ‘1 o’clock bowlers’ as you call them in two-day cricket, guys that are going to bowl with a brand-new ball and create a few issues for the batsmen.
“We were really lucky that we had guys we were able to speak to that were interested and had that Premier Cricket experience.”
Excitement also surrounds the inclusion of young gun Aaron Stephen, with the right-arm quick impressing after opening the bowling in the Second XI’s final match of last season.
A multiple RDCA junior representative, Stephen crosses from St Andrew’s and recently opened the bowling in the RDCA’s under-18 Phil Arnold Shield side.
“He’s one of those guys that has the potential to be a First XI all-rounder as he grows and develops,” Kilby said.
The club is expected to retain most of the First XI, with the exception of keeper Eitan Litvin, who returns to the UK after 298 runs and 14 catches last season.
The Waters are also set to be boosted by the return of all-rounder Jack Livingstone, opening batsman Robbie Cox and key bowler Luke Turner after long lay-offs, with Kilby likening the trio to “recruits”.
“All three are fit and raring to go,” Kilby said.
“I think there’s going to be a lot of competition for spots and that’s exactly what we’re after.”
