A SECOND century of the season from Ryan Pearson has helped push Plenty Valley into the top echelon of the VSDCA ladder.

The Bats opener belted four sixes and six boundaries on his way to scoring 109 against Croydon, enjoying a 135-run first-wicket stand with Rory Collins (67).

Pearson lost his wicket when he was caught short of his ground in the quest for quick runs at the end of the innings.

The milestone comes after amassing 172 against Coburg in the opening round in his second season at the club.

It pushes his tally to 388 runs — already close to what he accrued in 2017-18 after arriving from Premier Cricket outfit Kingston-Hawthorn.

“The openers set up an amazing opening stand,” captain-coach James Dickinson said of the team’s 6-214 total.

“It was a matchwinning partnership.

“Pearso has made a lot of runs this year. He is proving to be one of the best players in the competition with bat, ball and in the field.

“He is a star. Two hundreds this year, he is taking his batting to a new level.”

The Bats then restricted the visitors to 8-183 at Yarrambat War Memorial Park thanks to a star turn from all-rounder Callum Nankervis.

The medium-pace bowler captured the first wicket before barging through Croydon’s middle-order to claim 5-41.

But Dickinson said it was the bowling of veteran Sean Ayres (1-21) and a second spell from Simon Black (0-36) who brought the game back under control after Croydon made an aggressive start, led by Aaron Fenton (64).

Ikroop Dhanoa also took 2-32 as the young spinning star looks ever more assured at the high level of cricket.

“Nothing fazes him,” Dickinson said.

“He is a 14-year-old kid who is in Subbies firsts, bowls when you ask him and doesn’t shy away from it.”

Plenty Valley is now third on the ladder after Mt Waverley, Kew and St Bernard’s Old Collegians all lost on Saturday.

With big clashes to come against Noble Park and Preston before the Christmas break, Dickinson said it was important to keep up the momentum in what is a tightly fought season.
