Rarely do Kew star pair Chris Weeks and David Wildsmith not help themselves to runs.

Even more scarcely do the duo miss out in consecutive weeks.

After both registered single-digit scores in the shock Round 9 defeat against Endeavour Hills last week, Mount Waverley spinner Milan Fernando removed both cheaply — Wildsmith for 2 and Weeks for 12 — on Saturday on his way to a six-wicket haul.

Fernando finished with the immaculate figures of 6-57 from 31 overs, including 14 maidens, but Kew was still able to set up a challenging chase for the Roos.

A half-century from opener Bernie Anderson lifted the home side to a competitive total of 202 in the Round 10 North/East group clash at Victoria Park.

Anderson provided a stable hand at the top of the order, hitting 53 from 145 deliveries, before he departed with the score at 4-115.

Mika Kelliher (26) was promoted to opener after last week’s half-century against the Eagles and laid the platform for Kew, putting on a 53-run partnership with Anderson for the first wicket.

But with Wildsmith and Weeks back in the sheds and the game evenly poised at 4-115, Mt Waverley had a chance to control the day’s play.

Instead, Matthew Anderson (36), Rohan Wight (32) and Lucas Agnoletto (19) ensured honours were squared after day one as Kew looks to break a run of four consecutive losses.

Kew sits in eighth on the VSDCA table as it looks to make up ground on the fourth-placed Mt Waverley.

Weeks said his side did well to hang in the contest.

“The ground was very, very slow. The wicket was good, it was challenging, there was a bit for both bat and ball,” Weeks said.

“It was a very good cricket wicket … when you look at 200 it looks a bit below par but when you sum up conditions I think it is around about the mark.

“We’re well and truly in the game. Obviously it is now up to our bowlers to get the job done.”
