Kew is shaping as one of the leading premiership contenders for the coming Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season after signing a former Victoria all-rounder.

Ex-Bushranger Will Sheridan has been unveiled as the club’s latest boom recruit after crossing from Victorian Turf Cricket Association outfit Yarraville Club. He adds to Kew’s recent off-season additions of former Test, ODI and T20 international all-rounder John Hastings and ex-Melbourne Premier batsman Matt Brown.

Sheridan spent four seasons with Yarraville Club, taking 80 wickets and scoring 1749 runs and played an integral role in the Clubbers’ 2017-18 premiership with an unbeaten 112. His 2019-20 season delivered 492 runs and 21 wickets.

Yarraville Club confirmed earlier this month that due to “increasing work and family commitments”, Sheridan would step away from cricket.

But Kew president Peter Sist said the lure to play with close mates Hastings and batsman Andrew Chalkley drew the former Melbourne Renegade to the club.

“It’s almost like they’re getting the band back together with (Chris) Weeks, Hastings and Sheridan in particular and then of course Sheridan’s a good mate of Chalkley as well,” Sist said.

“They’re looking for the opportunity entering the twilight years of their careers of why we always started playing cricket, and that’s to play with your mates and they get an opportunity to do that.

“It’s a weird cricket season (due to COVID-19) but if you want to get some sense of normality, play with your mates.”

Sist said the inclusions of Sheridan, Hastings and Brown would have a profound influence on the playing group, which finished fourth on the North-West First XI ladder in 2019-20.

“We were pretty happy with that we assembled last year and get as far as we did, and it was always going to hold us in good stead moving forward,” Sist said.

“But to bring in inclusions like Hastings, Brown and now Sheridan, they’re going to be massive for the club and they’ll all play ones and there’s going to be massive competition for guys in other XIs to want to get better.

“I suppose when you’re bowling next to Hastings or Sheridan or you’re bowling at Brown, your skillset’s going to improve just by being with these blokes and just learning and listening.

“That’s going to be one of the big messages at Kew this year – is to look and listen, and really sponge off Sheridan, Hastings and Brown in regard to improving your own skillset. We’re pretty excited.”
