The opening round of the Big V season had it all.

From shock results to stunning individual performances, there was no shortage of key moments.

Here are our biggest.

WE SEE YOU MELBOURNE UNI

Melbourne University have arrived in the Championship Men’s Division with a bang.

A stunning 115-108 win over defending champions Wyndham on opening night — behind 30 points from Nicholas Masunda — ensured one of the division’s newest teams made their mark early.

Joel Rimes and Xavier Evans both had 22 points in an impressive display while Liam Killey had 18 off the bench.

That’s despite Wyndham import Maurice Green dropping 46 points.

BENCH TRIO LIGHT UP CAMBERWELL’S START

Life in the Championship Division is off to a perfect start for the Dragons after they recorded a five-point win over Pakenham.

It was the trio of Eleni Valos, Samantha Labros and Saule Kontautaite off the bench who proved critical as they combined for 41 points.

Valos also hauled in 11 rebounds.

HUME RACES OUT OF THE BLOCKS

It’s been an impressive start to the season from Hume with the Broncos hoping to push into title contention.

They won their opening two games against Keysborough and McKinnon with new signing Troyce Manassa already looking like a huge addition.

A huge test awaits against Sunbury this weekend.

MICHAEL BIRT, WOW

Michael Birt has made a good as start to the season as anyone in Big V Basketball.

He had 25 points in Warrandyte’s loss to Gippsland United before exploding for 52 points in his side’s eight-point win over Collingwood on Sunday.

That massive game included just three triples which goes against the trend of the modern game.

BELLARINE LAYS DOWN A MARKER

Georgia Varley was the big name recruit for the Bellarine Division 1 women’s team and she’s already proving to be a difference maker.

The former NBL1 star had 23 points, including the game tying layup, along with three assists and three steals in her side’s win over defending champions Warrnambool.

Despite the loss, the Mermaids won’t be hitting the panic button with their young squad continuing to build chemistry in the coming weeks.

COLLINGWOOD OFF TO A FLYER

After a difficult 2022 season, Collingwood’s Division 2 women’s side looks set to be an excitement machine this season.

The All Stars raced out of the blocks to record a 66-54 win over Mornington, who finished top of the ladder last season.

Bella Doherty led the way for Collingwood with 14 points.

It must be noted that both sides are looking very different to last year.

FORMER NBL STAR TURNS BACK THE CLOCK

You can’t afford to sleep on Darryl Corletto.

The former NBL gun lit it up at the weekend with a remarkable 37 points for Western Port on an inside 9-13 from deep.

Although the Steelers went down by nine points against Camberwell.

VOCALE THE MATCH WINNER

Gene Vocale is going to be fun to watch for Craigieburn this season.

The Eagles star scored 15 of his 29 points in the last quarter against Sherbrooke at the weekend to lead his side to a stunning 98-93 Division 2 Men’s victory.
