THIS week’s Sunday spotlight puts a day out for EDFL forwards, an EFL milestone at Doncaster, a breakthrough VAFA win and an emotional gesture to a champion clubman under the microscope.
NFL: Dromana does it for Huntsy
This one meant more than most for Dromana. Just days after receiving another cancer setback, Tigers champion Adam Hunter made an emotional return for what appears likely to be his last game. Dromana produced the perfect result for Hunter, coming from behind to beat Pearcedale by 24 points. Tigers coach Doug Koop described the match as one of the most special occasions in the club’s history.
VAFA: South Mornington celebrates a rare win
SOME supporters said they had never heard the South Mornington song belted out with such gusto after the Victorian Amateur Football Association broke through for its first win in nearly two years on Saturday. South Mornington broke its duck in style, hammering Chadstone by 69 points on a day where its reserves also won. The celebrations will continue this weekend when Jimmy Dowsett breaks Greg Pullen’s club games record.
EDFL: Ex-AFL players put on a clinic
DEFENDERS must wonder whether their luck has run out when they get assigned the task of minding Aberfeldie’s Kyle Reimers and Pascoe Vale’s Ben Warren. Reimers ran rings around Maribyrnong Park on Saturday and finished with 12 majors, while former North Melbourne forward Warren slotted 10 against Northern Saints.
RDFL: Romsey sends a reminder
If you thought Romsey would fall off the perch after its 2014 RDFL flag, think again. The Redbacks sent a timely reminder to the rest of the competition with a 23-point win over Diggers Rest in a rematch of last year’s season decider. Zak Saad and Brad Mitchell starred for the home side.
VAFA: Therry’s home record extends
A few weeks ago, we reported on Therry Penola’s incredible 20-game home record over the past few years. The Lions stretched that record to 22 consecutive matches with a come-from-behind win over Williamstown CYMS, exacting some revenge for last year’s VAFA Division 1 grand final loss. Jarrod and Corey Bannister shared nine goals in the win.
EFL: Thompson stars on milestone occasion
NATHAN Thompson put on a clinic to finish with nine goals as Doncaster celebrated its 1000th match in style on Saturday. The Sharks ran out 163-point winners over East Burwood in Eastern Football League Division 2.
