THIS week’s Sunday Spotlight examines Aberfeldie’s claim to EDFL premiership favouritism, Keysborough’s perfect start to life in the Southern Football League, Deer Park’s WRFL rivals closing the gap and more.

WRFL: RIVALS CLOSE ON DEER PARK

FOR years, the sizeable gap between Deer Park and the rest of the Western Region Football League has been unquestionable. But results over the early rounds of 2015 suggest the Lions’ Division 1 rivals are closing. On Saturday, the reigning premier had to shake off a gallant St Albans, getting home by seven points. The close shave came two weeks after Werribee Districts got within four points of handing Deer Park its first loss in two years.

EDFL: UNSTOPPABLE ABERS KEEP WINNING

IT WAS billed as a possible grand final preview, but Aberfeldie made light work of Pascoe Vale in an Essendon District Football League blockbuster on Saturday. Abers won by 69 points against the Panthers, leading at every change at Clifton Park. Jack McNamara booted five goals and Kyle Reimers four as Abers made it seven from seven under Adam Potter. The question now is, can anyone stop the flag favourites?

SFL: KEYSBOROUGH’S UNBEATEN START

KEYSBOROUGH looks right at home in the Southern Football League, winning its seventh consecutive match against Highett on Saturday. After struggling in the Casey Cardinia league last year, the winning feeling has returned to Keysborough over the opening months of 2015 following a league switch. Forward Tyson King has been a key component to the side’s success with 36 goals.

NFL: HARVEY MAKES AN INSTANT IMPACT

ONE game, one best on ground performance. Former Heidelberg rover Blair Harvey made the perfect start to life at his new club Hurstbridge, spearheading the Bridges’ huge win over Mernda in Northern Football League Division 2. Harvey’s recruitment was announced last week, days before Banyule unveiled former Essendon and Fremantle spearhead Scott Gumbleton to end a bumper week of recruiting news.

EFL: EX-DEES HELP GET CHIRNSIDE PARK ON BOARD

THE addition of more than 450 games of AFL experience helped Chirnside Park score its first win in Eastern Football League Division 3. Aaron Davey, Paul Wheatley and Matthew Whelan were cleared to play for the Panthers last week against Park Orchards. But the trio were almost upstaged by Chris Smith, who booted seven goals in his side’s 18.8 (116) to 11.9 (75) victory.

VAFA: WESTBOURNE STAR IN SERIOUS FORM

Is there a more in-form goalkicker than Westbourne Grammarians Dale Collins? After booting two goals in the opening two rounds of the campaign, Collins has bagged 36 in four weeks, including a 15-goal haul against Masala on Saturday. The effort followed three bags of seven goals over the past three weeks. Collins is 10 goals ahead of Canterbury’s Scott Fitzgerald on the goalkickers list after his outstanding effort in the Grammarians’ 30.18 (198) to 3.6 (24) win.

ONE FROM LEFT FIELD: Geelong’s players must have packed the wrong boots before heading to Shepparton for their AFL Victoria Country Championships fixture against the Goulburn Valley league. The star-studded league had 7.25 at one stage of their match before winning by 35 points, 12.30 (102) to 9.13 (67).
