Croydon has unveiled its new coach as it looks for improvement in the 2020-21 Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association season.

The club finished at the foot of the table in the South-East group in 2019-20 with just three wins to its name.

Fast-bowler Tom McQuinn has taken on the head role, after outgoing coach Jason Wylie stepped down due to work commitments.

But the pair are set to form a handy partnership in the coaching ranks, with McQuinn to serve as a playing-coach with Wylie as assistant coach.

Croydon president Tom Murphy said excitement surrounded McQuinn’s appointment after he initially expressed interest in the role earlier this year.

“Tom came (to Croydon) in 2015-16, he’s a great fast-bowler for our club, but he sort of came to us in March this year and said he’s had a passion to do it (coach), and obviously he’s really keen to take on that role as well,” Murphy said.

“Unfortunately due to work circumstances, (Jason Wylie) couldn’t take on the role again this year, but fortunately he’s actually come on and supported Tom by being assistant coach for the year which is great, just before he goes off and sorts his own work out.”

A start date for the Subbies cricket season remains a “wait and see” proposition according to VSDCA president Phil O’Meara, but the association has earmarked Saturday, October 10 as a potential start date with no football to be played in October.

VSDCA secretary Ken Hilton said in July that the season would consist of 13 rounds and a mixture of one and two-day matches, with the flexibility “to swing two-dayers into one-dayers and still get the 13 rounds played” should the season be halted at any stage.

The association said the 2020-21 season would conclude across the last weekend of March.
