ST BERNARD’S hopes to welcome back Andrew Merrington and Chad Jones for its crunch Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier match against Old Trinity on Saturday.
The pair have booted 38 goals in a combined 14 games this season and will add much-needed potency to the Snowdogs if they are available for the top-three clash.
“We’ve got quite a few injuries at the moment, so we’re trying to work our way through those,” St Bernard’s coach Anthony Rock said.
“Other clubs are going through the same sort of issues, whether it be players going away or getting injured.
“We’re still working out what our best side is, we have a bit of depth with our reserves going well and our thirds going well.”
The Snowdogs were pushed until the final siren by bottom side Old Brighton on Saturday, benefiting from their accuracy in front of goal in a 13.5 (83) to 9.16 (70) win.
Old Brighton finished with a flurry at Brighton Beach Oval, kicking 5.5 to 2.1 in the final quarter after it trailed by 35 points at three-quarter-time.
“They were probably a bit harder at the contest than us, which is disappointing because that’s a really good trait of ours,” Rock said.
While the ladder suggests St Bernard’s, Old Trinity and Uni Blacks are a cut above the rest of the competition, Rock said the close result showed no team could be underestimated.
“Obviously the ladder suggests that, but the competition is even,” he said.
“There are no easy games, regardless of the ladder position and that I suppose is the beauty of this competition.
“You’ve got to go in with the right mindset each week and perform.”
The Snowdogs will be out for revenge this weekend after losing in the final minute against Old Trinity in Round 1.
“It’s a big game, they got us in Round 1 in the last 30 seconds,” Rock said.
“While I still felt that they were the better team on the day we still had the opportunity to win that with 30 seconds to go.”
The match kicks off at 2pm at St Bernard’s College.
