School cricket: Runs keep coming for Josh Walker and Will Townsend in the APS

Mentone Grammar paid tribute to former premiership captain Shane Warne in the AGSV, and Will Townsend continued his sparkling season in the APS.

There was another ton for Wesley College batsman Josh Walker in Round 9 of the APS competition.

But Old Scotch’s Will Townsend matched it and gave his team victory in the First XI match at the Wesley St Kilda Rd ground.

The home team batted first and reached 198, with Walker opening the batting and scoring an even 100.

It came off 288 balls, included 1 six and 11 fours, was his second century this season and his fifth for the school, believed to be a record.

The Wesley innings occupied 114 overs.

Opening bowler Lachlan Francis claimed 6-25 off 19 overs with his right-arm fast-mediums, and then Townsend raced to 131 not out as his team sped to victory three wickets down, with five minutes of play left.

He’s having a golden summer in the APS: he also scored tons against St Kevin’s (109) and Geelong Grammar School (146), and he leads the competition run aggregate with 540 at an average of 108.

Melbourne Grammar’s Harry Dixon hit his first ton of the season as his side completed an outright victory over Haileybury College.

Dixon’s 107 came off 100 balls and contained 3 sixes and 13 fours.

MG dismissed Haileybury for 118, rushed to 7-280 before declaring and knocked over the visitors a second time for 137.

Opening bowler Jeremy A’Beckett took eight wickets for the match – including 5-27 off 12 overs in Haileybury College’s second innings – and Nick Sharpin seven.

St Kevin’s College routed Geelong Grammar, making 189 and rattling through its opponent for only 82.

Kove Cikala has his best performance of the season with 4-16 off 15 overs and Patrick Jones nabbed 3-3 off eight.

Caleb Candappa’s determined 57 was the high point of the St Kevin’s innings.

The thriller of the round was at Brighton Grammar, where the home team came up two runs short in a gallant chase of Carey Grammar’s 232.

Brighton opener Noah Hartman distinguished himself by batting through the innings for 100 not out, off 188 deliveries and with nine boundaries.

Tom Wrigglesworth (70) and Max Chisholm (75no) struck half-centuries as Caulfield Grammar waltzed past Xavier College, cracking 5-271 in reply to 124.

Oliver Warburton captured 5-40 for CG, his best return of the season.

In the AGSV competition, Mentone Grammar pulled off a tremendous upset victory over Ivanhoe Grammar.

Christian Howe blitzed 89 off 79 balls, Matt Langenfelds 43 and Jesse Van Rooyen 45 not out as the Mentone side reached 4-229 off its 50 overs.

Ivanhoe Grammar was all out for 150, Nathaniel Petty (four) and Murphy Dickson (three) sharing seven wickets for Mentone Grammar.

Two days earlier MG players and the visiting Yarra Valley Granmmar XI had observed a minute of silence for Mentone Grammar’s former skipper Shane Warne.

Warne had captained the school to a premiership in 1986-87.

His premiership teammate and Keysborough Playing Fields curator Wayne Fuller was on hand for the tribute.
