Runs and wickets aplenty across Melbourne’s local cricket competitions

Centuries, big bags and hat-tricks, it was all happening – as Bill Lawry would say – in local cricket. Check out the weekend’s high achievers.

Will Martiniello took a hat-trick for Carnegie South.
Will Martiniello took a hat-trick for Carnegie South.

Will Martiniello is a good footballer.

An onballer, he played for Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup, for Werribee in the VFL and is now co-coach of the Benalla Saints seniors.

The 31-year-old is also a useful cricketer, as he showed in the South East Cricket Association’s Woolnough Shield on Saturday.

Bowling leg-spin, Martiniello grabbed 6-29 off 7.4 overs against Hampton Central, including a hat-trick with his first three balls.

He had his first victim LBW, bowled his second and had the third batsman caught behind.

It was a first hat-trick for Martiniello, who has joined some mates from Benalla in playing at Carnegie South.

“Really good feeling,’’ he said. “It’s a bit like getting a hole in one, I guess, a sporting moment that doesn’t happen very often. It didn’t sink in for a couple of days.’’

Martiniello played junior and senior cricket in Benalla but ultimately put his sporting focus on football, going through the Bushrangers and then on to Werribee, where he had five seasons, playing under Simon Atkins, Paul Satterley and Scott West.

He joined Carnegie South last season.
