Plenty of shocked looks when players arrived for the second day of the Victorian Premier Cricket match between Greenvale Kangaroos and St Kilda at Greenvale on Saturday.
Despite it being a dry week, they were greeted by a wet wicket table and surrounds.
Play was abandoned. Greenvale were 1-12 chasing St Kilda’s 4(dec)-405.
St Kilda fired in an appeal in the hope of being awarded the points as it chases a top-spot finish on the ladder.
And, from what we hear, the Saints may well be given the points.
HAS THERE BEEN AN UNLUCKIER RUN-OUT?
Altona North’s Tom Harrison probably felt a little hard one by in his side’s Victorian Turf Cricket Association T20 clash with Newport Digman last week. And fair enough. He has every right to claim the unluckiest run-out of the season. Harrison was standing at the non-striker’s end when teammate Tom Taylor hit the ball straight at him, the ball hitting him on the arm and deflecting into the path of the bowler, Jack Ind, who proceeded to run Harrison out.
But should it have stood?
WELL PLAYED YOUNG MAN
Saahir Sharma probably won’t forget his game on Saturday anytime soon. The Clayton District under-11 cricketer took two hat-tricks in the same game. He took three wickets with his first three balls before repeating the feat in the sixth over of the day. Remarkably, all of the wickets were bowled. He finished with remarkable figures of 7-3 off four overs.
SPUN OUT
How about this haul from Bayswater’s Zac Hayes? The former Ringwood leg-spinner put on a clinic against Preston on Saturday with 6-40 in the Subbies North-West Second XI to send the hosts out for 178 in day one at Preston City Oval. Take a look at some of his handiwork ...
LINC SINKS DEMONS
It certainly has been a hot time for big cricket hauls. Take the performance of Lincoln Brown, who took 5-0 for Tyabb against Rye in a Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association seconds match last weekend. What made the bowling display really special was that it completely changed the game, Brown coming on in the 30th over with Rye at 5-101 and the teenager proceeding to take two wickets in his first over, one in his second and two in his third to send Rye crashing all out for 109. In reply, Tyabb reached 8-126 by stumps, securing first innings points, with man-of-the-moment Brown on 13 not out.
A RARE DOUBLE
Usually one hat-trick is a lot to celebrate but what about two in the same game. Plenty Cricket Club juniors Ajun Sembey and Cillian Wenholz achieved the feat last Friday night for their side. Sembey finished with 3-6 off two overs while Wenholz claimed 4-8 off five. What an awesome effort from the lads.
DUCK!
There was a unique milestone at Carrum Downs Cricket Club last month when Mark Carlson made his 50th career duck, spanning two decades. Not wanting to let the “achievement’’ go by without fanfare, a cheeky teammate listed all 50 ducks on a framed board and propped it up on the bar at CDCC for all to see. Mark, regarded as a brilliant volunteer at the Cougars for his efforts in raising vital money for the club, is a much-loved character and he’s having just as much fun with it as his teammates are. His best, er, worst, season of ducks? That was six, in 2008-09.
