The Heat is rising.
Frankston Peninsula will have a sharp edge to its bowling attack next season with the addition of former Dandenong grand final paceman Jack Fowler.
Tasmanian Rowan Shelton, an all-rounder, has also joined the Heat.
And in a further boost, Fitzroy Doncaster great Peter Dickson has come on board as a batting coach.
Dickson had a decorated career and was involved in a golden era at the Lions.
In January, 2020 he became just the ninth player to pass 10,000 career runs in the state’s top domestic competition.
Dickson is friends with Frankston Peninsula wicketkeeper Jacques Augustin and coach Paul Boraston.
“I’ve known Dicko for a long time through under age Victorian stuff with him years ago,” Boraston said.
“We got chatting a little bit at the back end of last season and it went from there.
“He’s come on board to do some specialist batting work with us. It will be good to have some experience to come in and assist the batters.”
Fowler is having another crack at Premier Cricket after stints with Kingston Hawthorn and Dandenong.
He coached Dromana to a flag in MPCA District last season.
“He’s 26 and wants to have another crack at Premier Cricket,” Boraston said.
“It’s good to get him back in the system. Hopefully he’ll be a good addition for us.
“He’s got a bit of ball speed, too, which is something we’re looking for.”
Shelton played for South Hobart Sandy Bay in Cricket Tasmania Premier League.
“He wanted to come over to Melbourne and test himself over here in premier cricket,” Boraston said.
“He’s an allrounder, he’s only young, 21 or 22, and he’s pretty keen to see how he goes.”
Boraston said Frankston Peninsula was talking to other potential recruits.
“We probably need that top four batter who can make 500 runs, although every club is probably saying the same thing,” he said.
“We’ve identified that as an area we need to improve on — run scoring. But if we can get natural development from the group that played last year, with a couple of additions, we feel like we’re in a decent position.”
The Heat’s main departures are Patrick Nagel, who has returned to Rosebud, as captain, and Luke Gandy.
