RINGWOOD will have a new captain in 2018-19 after David King stepped down from the role as the Rams continue to hunt top-order reinforcements.

King announced earlier this month he would be standing down as skipper after holding the position for the past two seasons.

The 27-year-old will instead move into an assistant coaching role, with a replacement expected to be confirmed in the coming week.

King said juggling work and cricket commitments meant he could no longer commit as captain.

“I had a little think about it, spoke to a few people close to me and just wanted to see the direction I wanted to go with cricket and professional-wise with work,” King said.

“(I’m) finishing uni this year and I have to put more time into what I want to do work-wise and obviously captaining is obviously a fairly big time commitment away from cricket.

“It definitely wasn’t a decision I took lightly, I had a big think and talked to coaches, family and friends close to me to see what the best way going forward was.”

Champion all-rounder Ian Holland is also on track to return this summer after missing most of 2017-18 with a shoulder injury, while David Johnson has returned to Warranwood after a two-year stint at Jubilee Park.

The Rams have also been active on the recruiting front as they look for top-order batsmen to support King, who finished runner-up in the Ryder Medal last season after churning out 736 runs.

Ringwood has ranked in the bottom three for the past five seasons for ‘runs for’, with the bulk of the scoring left to King and Holland.

“It is difficult but we are going to keep trying, we haven’t landed any big top-order players at the moment but there’s still a bit of time,” King said.

“We’re still in that process at the moment but we’ve definitely been speaking to as many players that meet what we’re looking for to improve our club.”
