The Camberwell Magpies’ search for a new coach has landed in their own backyard.
David Alleyne will lead the Premier Cricket club for the next two years, after serving as batting assistant across the past two seasons.
He takes up the key post a month after 2021-22 mentor Ben Ryan resigned from the role.
The young Magpies finished 17th with a 3-12-1 record this season.
Club president Peter Warner said Alleyne was the “standout candidate” among a quality field and would be the “ideal coach to further advance the development of our young club”.
The ‘Pies boasted five players in the Victorian metro under-19 squad at the recent national championships, with Oliver Jenkins, Tom Nelson, Dhruv Redhu, Will Townsend and Spencer Wood all selected.
“He (David) has been with us for two years and done a very good job with our batsmen,” Warner said.
“We’ve got five in the Vic under-19s side and he’s had a big hand in that (and) the players absolutely love him.”
Warner said the club had to move swiftly in its search for a coach and hoped the new era at the Magpies would signal stability in the top job.
Alleyne’s two-year deal comes with the option of a third.
Three have preceded Alleyne in as many years with former ANU director of coaching Ben Ryan, former Scottish international Ian Stanger and Tasmanian Brad Loveluck having held the role.
“We had to (move quickly), because we’ve had three coaches in the last three years,” Warner said.
“We went through it (the process) pretty thoroughly – David knew everyone and he’s well respected.”
Warner said the club would have “more to announce in the near future on the balance of our coaching group” while the incoming coach would begin planning for pre-season.
