Fitzroy-Doncaster coach Matt Bremner touts his latest addition as one of the best spinners in the competition.

Harkirat Bajwa has landed at Schramms Reserve, crossing from Premier Cricket rival Melbourne where he established himself as a regular in the First XI at just 20.

The two-time Under-19 Australian representative sought a “fresh opportunity” according to Bremner after bagging 19 wickets at 29.37 last season.

“He kind of fell in our lap – we weren’t searching for another spinner,” he said.

“We are very happy with the spinners we have and the depth we have at the club, but when a player of Baj’s quality lands on your door step, you’re not going to turn it down.

“We rate him really highly and we think he’s a top-three spinner in the comp.

“He’s leaving there on good terms – there’s no bad blood between him and Melbourne and he’s seeking a fresh opportunity.

“We’re glad he thought Fitzroy-Doncaster was a good place to play cricket and we’re rapt to have him.”

Bremner hoped the off-spinning young gun could push for higher honours.

“He’s not putting too much pressure on himself and what will be will be, but he still wants to play cricket at the best level possible,” he said.

“Hopefully bowling at Schramms every second week will give him a few more opportunities to take a few more wickets and put his name up in lights.”

Heavy-hitting BBL name Josh Brown has returned to Queensland after losing his Victorian contract, but Bremner said the core of the squad was expected to remain.

“We expect to still have him (Brown) when he comes down to play for the Renegades … but apart from that, we’ve kept every player that we’ve wanted to keep.”
