ANOTHER milestone ticked off for the man widely regarded as Ringwood’s greatest across its century-long history.
Captain David King notched his 10,000th First XI career run on Saturday in his side’s victory over Melbourne Uni, becoming just the 10th player in Premier Cricket to achieve the feat.
The 2019-20 Ryder medallist is also the only player to reach the mark while playing at Ringwood – and is one of just three players to do so for one club.
Entering the crease following a duck in his last outing, King’s return of 44 sealed the deal in the Rams’ second innings.
The veteran of more than 250 matches knew the milestone was on the horizon, with the honour adding to a glistening cricket CV including a swag of Team of the Year gongs and club champion awards.
“I sort of had in the back of my mind before the season started that I needed 10 runs … I thought I’d try and knock that over in the first round and I think I made one run in my first two innings,” King said.
“I still wanted to get it over and done with to be honest, and to knock that over was good … it wasn’t worrying me but it was nice just to knock it out the way.”
The honour isn’t lost on the three-time First XI premiership star and former national and state representative.
“It’s not something you think about all the time, but it’s still a nice achievement I’ll look back on once I’m done … you’ve got to play a long time to get there, I think,” King said.
The Rams sit 2-0 following their 16-run win over Melbourne Uni, after holding off the Camberwell Magpies in an opening-round thriller.
Front and centre in the two-day Uni victory was bowling talent Jarryd Cameron, collecting six wickets.
A recruit to the club this season following stops at Dandenong, and Bayswater where he was coached by current Ringwood mentor, Sean Flynn, a haul of 5-32 off 18 overs on debut told the tale of Cameron’s contribution.
His effort included the scalps of Uni’s Andrej Yaksender and Ali Khan for ducks, while he also halted top-order batsman George Lavelle on a run of 46.
He backed up a blistering first outing with the ball by claiming Uni captain and opener, Fergus McKenna, on Saturday.
“He came down this year and really impressed everyone, with his whole pre-season, the quality of his bowling and the effort he gave,” King said of Cameron.
“He was picked in the seconds in Round 1, but he didn’t play because they obviously didn’t get on (the field) and then there was an injury to one of our fast-bowlers.
“He was next up, and gee, he took his opportunity, didn’t he?
“A lot of those six wickets were top-order batsmen.”
