The Premier Cricket season is not yet set in the books, but already Casey South Melbourne has locked in two good recruits.

The Swans last Saturday secured Hallam Kalora Park allrounder Jordan Hammond, who played for them in the inaugural Victorian Super Slam.

Hammond, 22, had an excellent season in the DDCA, finishing runner-up to the legendary Steve Spoljaric in the Wookey Medal.

The son of DDCA great Johnny Hammond, he hit 481 Turf 1 runs at 32.1 and with his right-arm pace claimed 36 wickets at 18.8.

He was outstanding in the semi-final against Berwick with 5-60 off 29.4 overs.

A few days earlier Casey South Melbourne signed fast bowler Nick Huttley, 24, from the South East Cricket Association.

The right-arm fast bowler won the league medal this season for his 37 wickets for West Bentleigh.

The day after his victory he trained at Premier club Melbourne University.

But Huttley accepted an offer from the Swans, whose head coach, Brian Keogh, said he appreciated West Bentleigh encouraging Huttley to have a dash at the higher level.

He bowled in the Casey nets last Wednesday and Keogh and director of cricket Craig “Doc’’ Lambden were impressed.

“Apart from the fact that he clearly has some talent as a bowler what impressed us as much as anything was the glowing terms in which he spoke of West Bentleigh and the fact he felt so supported in having a shot at playing Premier Cricket,’’ Keogh said.

After two seasons away from the club Keogh has returned to the Swans as head coach, agreeing to a three-year term.
