Monash Tigers spinner Lachlan Fitzpatrick grabbed two crucial wickets late on day one against Carlton but the Blues hold the whip hand in the Round 12 Premier Cricket fixture at Central Reserve.
Carlton hitter Brayden Stepien popped the ball up to first slip off his pad, departing for a quick-fire 30, before Fitzpatrick grabbed the edge of fellow opener Tom Smyth (22) in the last over of the day.

Carlton bowlers Aaron Smillie (3-29 off 16 overs) and Smyth (3-39 off 16) had earlier shared the top-order spoils before Cameron Stevenson (3-43 off 13.3) grabbed three middle-order scalps as the Tigers were bowled out for 189.
Yesterdayâs match v Carlton saw our second 16 year old debutante this season. It was a special day not only for Will Parker but for Dad Cam who also played for RCC. Club legend Sam Taylor played with both Father and Son and Jim Hamilton scored both debuts pic.twitter.com/Lk7C1ikcEM

How about the bloodlines of @MonashTigers debutant Wil Parker? His father Cameron played 100 games at the Tigers, uncle Geoff Parker played Shield cricket and VFL football and uncle Dale Weightman is a @Richmond_FC great.

Captain Daniel Sartori and Scott Edwards had batted Monash into a position of strength at 1-121, only for the home side to lose their last nine wickets for 68.
The Blues finished the day with 2-76 and need only a further 114 runs for victory with eight wickets in hand.
The Tigers were dealt a further blow with Sam Taylor retiring hurt after coping a nasty blow to his thumb from a rising Stevenson delivery.
Monash captain Daniel Sartori said Fitzpatrick, who finished with 2-23 from six overs, had given his side a shot at victory.
“We saw their spinners had bowled well during the day and the wicket was pretty dry at the end of the day and breaking up a little bit,” Sartori said.
“Youngy (coach Shannon Young) and I spoke and thought it would be a good idea to get the spinner on early and luckily it turned out to be a good thing.
“He bowled really well Fitzy, he was very impressive.”
Monash had to make four changes to its side from the team that defeated Frankston Peninsula in Round 11.
Krishna Padmanabhan was called up to open the batting, Blade Baxter returned to the First XI, opening bowler Mitch Perry was a welcome addition and 16-year-old Wil Parker made his debut.
Parker represented a Cricket Australia XI at the under-19 national championships in December and is viewed as one of the club’s most promising players.
His father, Cameron, played more than 100 games with the Tigers, his uncle Geoff Parker played Shield cricket and VFL football, while uncle Dale Weightman is a Richmond Football Club great.
Sartori topscored with 83, putting on 45 for the first wicket with Padmanabhan (18) and 76 for the second wicket with Scott Edwards (30) before Carlton’s bowlers ensured the visitors would take a decisive advantage heading into day two.
Monash will also be without opening bowler Fred Klassan for the rest of the season.
The Dutch international will travel to the UK this week to commence his County season preparations.
