You miss, I hit.
The age-old cricket adage that simplifies the art of bowling rung true for Parkfield’s Jordan Hill on Sunday, who hit, hit some more, and rarely missed.
Hill’s remarkable spell of 7-11 from 6.4 overs against Melton in Shield 2 of the Cricket Victoria women’s development league included an astounding triple hat-trick.
The five consecutive dismissals in question were: LBW, bowled, bowled, bowled, LBW.
“A double hat-trick is pretty rare, I’m not going to get that,” Hill had mused to herself after she completed her hat-trick.
How wrong she was. She beat the bat and the stumps were rattled.
“Okay it’s getting a bit too much now,” Hill thought to herself.
Her next ball wrapped Kellie Grant on the pads and a raucous appeal in unison followed.
“It was pretty plum, I was like ‘I can’t believe I’ve done this’, it was pretty unbelievable,” Hill said.
“It was a pretty surreal day and doesn’t feel like it’s sunk in yet.
“It was a bit windy on Sunday and I think that kind of worked in my favour, I was just trying to put it on the stumps as much as I could.
“So much of it is a blur I can’t even remember, I guess the ball was just in my favour that day.”
Parkfield would end up skittling Melton for 20 from 13.4 overs, before successfully chasing down the total in 7.4 overs with six wickets to spare.
Adding to the gravity of the achievement, Hill is a fourth generation Parkfield player, and her family boasts an astounding six life members.
Her father, Patrick is the club’s president and is a VFLW premiership coach, while mother Tara is the Dandenong District Cricket Association’s secretary.
Both were in attendance at Parkfield Reserve on Sunday, as was Hill’s cousin, best friend, and a handful of close family friends.
“Being able to do that at our home ground, the place I grew up, in front of people that I love was pretty special, Hill said.
Patrick, who has seen his fair share of special sporting moments, mused: “I was incredibly proud of her, it was one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen.”
Hill is in her fourth year as Parkwood’s secretary, and also runs the clubs social media and organises events.
“I grew up at the club so it means a lot to me and I just try and help out where I can,” she said.
And while the triple hat-trick is now a fond memory Hill will hold dear, it hasn’t detracted from her premiership quest, with Parkfield well positioned on top of the league’s table with two rounds to play.
“The individual accolades you get are pretty special but at the end of the day it’s a team game and the jobs not done yet,” Hill said
“We’re still a couple of games away from finals and that’s the main goal.”
If Hill keeps hitting, that premiership dream could well become reality.
