TOBY McLean will arrive at The Kennel this week knowing another new kid on the block is in his corner.

The phone of the 18-year-old Oakleigh Chargers star and Narre Warren product, who was the Western Bulldogs first selection (pick 26) in last Thursday night’s AFL national draft, has been running hot since but one phone call in particular put him at ease.

“Luke Beveridge, the new coach, rang on the night and welcomed me. He said he’s new to the club too and that we can help each other settle in. I thought that was pretty nice,’’ he said.

“I still don’t believe it, what’s happened, and I don’t think I will until I get there on Monday and start training.

“Then it will be more real.’’

It’s been an incredible year for McLean who was cut from the Dandenong Stingrays pre-season squad of 60 in January.

He weighed up playing another season of senior footy at Narre, but followed up on a contact at the Chargers, tried out with them then won a spot on their list.

Impressive form followed.

McLean kicked 27 goals during the home-and-away season, and five in finals, then added another string to his bow when he moved into the midfield and consistently produced 30+ possession games.

The high flyer took mark of the year with a spectacular grab against the Northern Knights in round 14, finished second in the Morrish Medal then was best afield in the Chargers’ grand-final win over Calder Cannons.

“Thinking back, if it was January right now I definitely wouldn’t have thought I’d end up where I am,’’ McLean said.

“I guess it’s been a bit different for me at times because I haven’t been through the pathways, I haven’t had expectations. But I just feel joy and relief now.

“I’m also very proud of my team mates who were drafted, I’ve spoken to them all and I couldn’t be happier for them.’’
