Sorrento has confirmed former Victorian Premier Cricket star Damian Shanahan will join its playing ranks.
He is likely to start out in the lower grades in November.
Shanahan has formed a friendship with Sorrento president Ben McDonald and jumped at the chance to pull on the pads again.
He resides in Geelong but will catch the ferry to Sorrento to play and intends to start out in a low grade.
“He’s keen,” McDonald said.
“He said about November he’ll start playing.
“He’s a ripper fella.
“He’ll just start in the thirds and see how his body goes. He hasn’t promised too much but it’s just great having him involved in the club.
“He probably wouldn’t bowl much but batting, he’ll be handy.”
Shanahan played 252 Premier Cricket First XI games, scoring more than 7000 runs and taking more than 280 wickets, in a decorated career with Camberwell Magpies and Geelong, twice finishing second in the Ryder Medal.
Shanahan coached Greenvale Kangaroos for the past two seasons.
Sorrento, under ex-state star Seb Gotch, has made a fast start to the MPCA Provincial season, sitting on top of the ladder after winning both of its matches.
