Langwarrin’s Matt Prosser has made MPCA history, winning a third consecutive Wally Wedgwood Medal as the best player in Provincial division.
The 28-year-old tied with Old Peninsula champion Justin Grant in a thrilling vote count.
Going into the final round, Baden Powell’s Rhys Elmi led by a vote but Prosser and Grant both polled three in the last game to tie, on 15 votes.
Prosser is the first player to win three consecutive Wedgwood medals.
Paul Hartle and Scott Phillips both won the medal three times, but not in a row.
Prosser impacted most games this season, scoring 321 runs as a top order batter and taking 29 wickets with his leggies.
Grant scored 403 runs, including knocks of 104 and 92, and took 15 wickets.
Prosser and Grant played Country Week together in February, and this weekend will face-off in the MPCA Provincial grand final.
Balnarring captain-coach Luke Hewitt claimed a fourth straight medal, winning the Robert Thompson Medal, in Sub District.
It followed three successive District medals while playing with Hastings.
Hewitt crossed to Balnarring as a boom recruit this season and has delivered, steering the Saints to an imperious minor premiership and into the grand final. He scored 528 runs, at 44, and nabbed 30 wickets, at 9.93.
Mt Eliza’s Rashmika Opatha won the John Hille Medal in Peninsula division.
The classy opener piled up 632 runs, at 45, to lead the Peninsula division run list. He posted five scores above fifty, including a top-drawer 108 against Dromana.
Crib Point all-rounder Matthew Blake won the EG Betts Medal in District after a consistent season with bat and ball, 346 runs and 21 wickets.
The MPCA women’s medal was won by Langwarrin star Kylie Walters, who peeled off two undefeated centuries in January and finished the season with 669 runs, at an eye-popping average of 334. She also captured 25 wickets, with a best of 7-6. And she captained Langwarrin to back-to-back premierships.
