MELTON Centrals coach Glenn Hopkins says he would continue to strive to build a strong culture at the club after a “disappointing” 2015 campaign came to an end on Saturday.
The Centrals finished the Riddell District Football League season with just two wins, having a bye scheduled for the final round this weekend.
Hopkins, in his first year as coach after crossing from Woodend-Hesket, said he would not shy away from the challenge of rebuilding the club, starting with developing an improved culture.
“Our under-18s have been really good and we’ve got a lot of juniors, just the more senior players we haven’t got enough consistency out of and that’s been disappointing,” he said.
“Training-wise and game-wise, we haven’t had the real consistency of effort and it’s told on the scoreboard.
“It’s not all about the scoreboard, but certainly habits are important for us, forming good habits.”
Hopkins said the Centrals would look to develop from within rather than being a big player on recruiting.
But he added the club’s move to a new $6.2 million facility at Arnolds Creek Recreation Reserve next year could help attract new players.
“Our major drawing point we think is the new ground,” he said.
“To be part of a whole new facility is going to be exciting for everybody, so we think that’s going to be a great drawing point as much as anything.
“Being more central in the town is going to help us because we can pull more people who will walk up to the club.
“We’re a bit isolated at the moment but we think that’s going to allow us to get more guys into the club simply because of the location.”
The Centrals suffered their biggest loss of the season on Saturday, going down to Diggers Rest 27.12 (174) to 3.1 (19) after recording a scoreless first half.
Kane Bullen was named the Centrals’ best.
Elsewhere, Sunbury Kangaroos took down Rockbank by 53 points.
