Replay: Old Brighton v Old Scotch - VAFA U19 Premier Men preliminary final

Old Brighton will take on St Kevin’s in the VAFA Under-19 grand final in what looms as a mouth-watering proposition after they ran over the top of Old Scotch at Sandringham.

Played in difficult blustery conditions, Old Brighton trailed narrowly at halftime before asserting their authority in the second half to surge away from their opponents.

The benchmark all season, Old Brighton will fancy their chances in the decider after rediscovering top form with their comprehsive 37-point victory.

Better ball movement, decision-making and efficiency by both foot and hand in the swirling wind were key elements in the win.

Tall forward Zac Bowen was a standout with three goals, including a superb individual effort in the second quarter when he found himself up against three defenders before breaking free and snapping from 30m out.

The goal was part of a huge momentum swing after Old Brighton had trailed by as much as 23 points earlier in the term.

Old Scotch jumped out of the blocks with the aid of the breeze in the first quarter, but didn’t take full advantage of the conditions and only led by 15 points at the first change.

Despite increasing that early in the second, it was Old Brighton who began to gain ascendancy as their talls came into the contest, the deficit reduced to just four points at halftime.

Bowen again found himself in the thick of things early in the third quarter when he ran into an open goal against the breeze, sending Old Brighton’s confidence skyward.

Despite Old Brighton still trailing by a point at three-quarter time, the four-goal breeze presented a momumental task for Old Scotch to hang on.

And Old Brighton didn’t hold back as they piled on seven goals to one to leave their opponents in the rearview mirror.

When Old Brighton’s Miller Chilcott goaled on the run at the 23-minute mark, Old Scotch well and truly knew their fate.

Bowen finished with three goals and Ryan Mckenzie and Chilcott both kicked two for Old Brighton, while Old Scotch had six individual goalkickers in the 13.5 (83) to 6.10 (46) outcome.

PREVIEW

Old Scotch has declared they have the firepower to turn the tables on rivals Old Brighton and book their spot in the VAFA Under-19 Premiers grand final.

Old Brighton go into the preliminary final full of confidence having beaten their rivals on every meeting this season.

But Old Scotch coach Mackenzie Morgan has declared the history between the two sides will be just that as a date with St Kevin’s OB awaits in the grand final.

The preliminary final will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV on Sunday.

Old Scotch beat the University Blues by 15 points last week to progress to this week’s preliminary final, but the margin could have been greater.

The team kicked 6.20 with the wind playing havoc.

“Conditions played a huge part (in the inaccuracy),” Old Scotch coach Mackenzie Morgan said.

“I’m a big believer in if you are having 25 shots on goal you are probably going to win the game.

“Even though we missed a lot of shots I’m happy with how it ends up.

“We played a lot of the game n our forward half.”

The focus against Old Brighton will be on controlling the contest.

Old Scotch lost both games this year against the opposition on Sunday but have been in both contests.

The last loss, by 20 points, gave the team confidence it could go on a finals run and beat Old Brighton if the teams faced each other again.

“There’s strong belief in the group right now with where we are at in the last month,” Morgan said.

“We played Brighton four weeks ago and a bit of inaccuracy in front of goals and they didn’t miss hurt us in that contest.

“We’re looking forward to playing them this weekend.”

But Old Scotch is wary of a team looking to avoid going out in straight sets.

Old Brighton lost by four points to St Kevins in the qualifying final and had chances to win late, kicking five straight behinds in the final term.

“The pressure game is going to be huge,” Morgan said.

“They like to play it out from defence and run it our from there.

“There will need to be effort and intent at the contest.”

The game starts at 9.20am
