LAUREN Jackson hopes her new executive role with the Melbourne Boomers has a lasting impact on the club and the WNBL.
Australia’s greatest ever basketballer has joined the Knox-based club as commercial operations manager under its new ownership which was unveiled today and ensures the Boomers will compete in the national league competition for a 33rd year next season.
A private consortium, led by Etihad Stadium chairman Tony Hallam with state government, Basketball Australia and Basketball Victoria backing, has taken over the licence from Bulleen Templestowe Basketball Club which has held it since 1984.
Jackson said the ongoing success of Australian women’s basketball needed a strong WNBL presence and a successful Boomers.
“I really admire the new owners who are putting their money and time into supporting women’s basketball and hopefully it won’t only help the Boomers but the WNBL,’’ Jackson told Leader.
“They contacted me pretty soon after I retired then came to Albury to see me after my knee surgery. We talked about it then and it did intrigue me because it’s something I wanted to get involved in, so it worked out really well for me.
“I’m really excited about being a part of the Boomers family, the professional experience and being in Melbourne. I just feel like it’s a great opportunity for me to get the experience I need to be in executive roles in the future and to also help grow our league.”
Jackson, who has a degree in business management and experience in various board roles and advocacy work, said the role was an important step in the next phase of her career and life.
The four-time Olympian and WNBL and WNBA legend retired in March.
“I know I’ll learn a lot and get practical experience in the workplace, which I need moving forward, and it also gives me something to look forward to,’’ Jackson said.
“I really feel like I need a break at the moment but now I know what I’m heading into next which is exciting. Staying in basketball is very important for me.”
Jackson will commute from her home in Albury and is set to start in the role in August following a commentary stint for Channel 7 at the Rio Olympics.
