Kew’s stunning VSDCA season has been rewarded with a maiden club championship.
The club’s First XI completed an undefeated home-and-away campaign on Saturday with a five-wicket win over St Bernard’s and finish 6.6 points clear of South powerhouse Oakleigh in the coveted award.
However, the entire club has enjoyed an outstanding season.
Kew’s Second XI and Fourth XIs lost just one game and two games respectively to finish on top of the ladder while the Third XI finished sixth.
Club president Peter Sist said every player, coach and volunteer played a part in the history-making season.
“It’s an extremely proud moment,” he said.
“It was always the aim at the start of the year … and everyone that’s pulled on a Kew jumper this season has contributed, which is awesome.
“There’s a huge group that work behind the scenes, it takes an entire club to win this award and everyone connected with Kew is very proud.
“This is one feather in our cap and hopefully we can put a few more in over the coming weeks.”
Along with the team success there has also been outstanding individual success.
Will Sheridan and Andrew Chalkley finished one-two in the North-South First XI run-scorers’ charts while Alastair Burge and Tom Chalkley were joint third for wickets.
James Clark dominated the Second XI competition, scoring 450 runs at an average of 112.50, with Bernie Anderson third overall and Will McGlaughlin equal second in wickets.
Nick Padbury and Josh Bernet finished second among Fourth XI run-scorers and wicket-takers with 451 runs and 23 poles respectively.
First XI captain-coach Chris Weeks paid tribute to all the hard work done behind the scenes.
“There’s been guys do a mountain of work behind the scenes from the president down,” he said.
“You play to win premierships but you don’t really get the opportunity to enjoy it with the whole club and to have 100 blokes contribute in some form, it’s rare to celebrate with everyone.
“Justin Graham did a lot of great stuff and then got an opportunity at Prahran and I took over (as coach).

“Getting someone like Andrew Wildsmith and Andrew Chalkley on board, they’ve been incredible, and we’ve been fortunate enough to get some good recruits over the time but more importantly they’ve fitted into the club really well.”
Kew will face Williamstown in the First XI qualifying final while the lower grades face Yarraville, Werribee and Williamstown.
“It would be nice if we can knock Willy off, last time our First XI played in a grand final it was against Williamstown and we finished second that day unfortunately,” Sist said.
“They’re a fantastic club, I know there’s a few friendly rivalries between the players, and we’d like to get one up on them on Saturday.”
