His old man is a legend of Australian football and now Jonas Markovski is looking to make his mark in the A-League.

Markovski’s stunning NPL Victoria Golden Boot-winning season for Altona Magic saw him signed by powerhouse Brisbane Roar for the coming campaign.

The 24-year-old striker made his club debut in Sunday’s 1-0 Australia Cup semi-final victory over familiar foe Melbourne Knights.

He replaced goalscorer Tom Waddingham in the 69th minute and had a couple of strong chances to put his name on the scoresheet but headed wide and was then denied by a top-class Chris Oldfield save.

Markovski said when a club liked the Roar called there was no hesitation.

“It’s an honour to put on his jersey, a club with such history, it’s awesome.

“It’s surreal, getting the opportunity to play in the A-League is unbelievable.

“Definitely (a surprise), I had a lot of interest from Brisbane but when the phone rings you answer.”

Coached by father John, Markovski produced a brilliant NPL season.

The Magic reached the finals for the first time since 2009 as the budding forward scored 19 goals to win the Golden Boot, NPL Victoria Players’ Player and finish second in Gold Medal voting.

He hopes to bring that goalscoring form to the nation’s top flight.

“The sky is the limit,” Markovski said.

“My short-term goal is definitely cement my spot in the league, work my arse off and see how we go, then long-term, who knows what can happen.

“It’s been a bit of transition, I’m slowly settling in, but a lot to learn and adapt to.

“They’ve got a particular gameplan they like to play, so I’ve got to adapt to that.

“I’ve got a lot to work on but hopefully we can get some goals going.”

Markovski will look to make his A-League debut when Brisbane Roar travels to Macarthur on October 21.

NPL: MARKOVSKI AIMS HIGH AFTER GOLDEN BOOT SEASON

Coach Ross Aloisi said he liked Markovski’s work ethic.

“He did really well in the Victorian Premier League in a team that finished fifth and to win the Golden Boot goes to show that he is a goal scorer,” Aloisi told the Roar website.

“It’s something that we’re looking to bring into the team, not just a player that is going to work hard but also someone that is a proven goalscorer and winner.”

Having ended Melbourne Knights’ fairytale Australia Cup run, Brisbane Roar will face Sydney FC in the final at Allianz Stadium on Saturday, October 7.
