Round 1 brought two centuries for Bayswater as it made an eye-grabbing start to the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association’s John Craig Shield on Sunday.

Opener Rex Sacristani hit 105 and No 3 Ronan Culloty was 115 not out in Baysy’s total of 3-252 against Endeavour Hills.

The pair put on 193 for the second wicket.

Sacristani faced 131 deliveries and put away 10 fours at Bayswater Oval.

Culloty hit 10 fours and 1 six and faced only 91 balls.

Endeavour Hills made 150 in reply, with Bayswater opening bowler Michain Premaratne, right-arm and quick, capturing 4-28 off 7.2 overs.

Waters coach Avi Singh said Sacristani and Culloty batted “superbly’’.

“We’ve been fortunate in the last couple of years in that one kid has made a big score to get us going in the first game, but to have two is phenomenal,’’ he said.

“Rexy started off nicely with some easy singles and picking the gaps and then Ronan came out with him and decided from ball one it was going to be his day. He was hitting the ball like some senior cricketers can’t hit it … the sound off the bat was really nice.’’

Sacristani is playing in Bayswater’s Third XI and Culloty is with Belgrave.

The Waters have performed well in the John Craig Shield in recent years and Singh said they had confidence in this season’s squad.

He said most of the players were from the Ringwood District association.

Opener Lachie Quinn, who played for Bayswater’s Second XI on Saturday, is captain.

“It’s a strong group, and the boys know each other quite well,’’ Singh said.

“They seem to enjoy each other’s company, which is a big thing. We always want the players to have fun. It works. If they enjoy themselves they’ll play better cricket.’’

There was another centurymaker in Round 1, with Moorabbin’s Lenny Wilton cracking 120 against Port Melbourne.

Wilton, who is playing Quiney Shield cricket for Le Page Park in the South East association, received 127 deliveries and scored 5 fours.

Moorabbin great Alan Marion said it was an outstanding innings.

Croydon’s Lucas Brasher grabbed 5-15 off nine overs as his team defeated Balwyn, and Plenty Valley’s Aryan Sharma cracked 98 against Coburg.

The John Craig Shield, formerly the RM Hatch Shield, is an Under 15 competition and has south, east, north and west divisions, each with eight teams.

Ormond is the defending champion and began its campaign with an emphatic victory over Brighton.

There were runs for Cooper Rojko (64), Tynan Forster (46), Jesse Van Rooyen (62no) and Alex Turner (45) as the Monders hit 3-237 in reply to 9-147.
