Hearts are heavy at Bulleen-Templestowe following the shock death of a club favourite.

Eighteen-year-old Connor Whyte died in his sleep of a suspected aneurysm on March 4, the club confirmed on social media.

The club, also known as the Bulleen Boomers, said it was “incredibly saddened” by Whyte’s death, whose family had been involved in its community for decades.

He was about to turn 19.

“The Whyte family have been part of our Bulleen basketball community for over 40 years, and we are incredibly saddened by their loss,” the club said.

Whyte was described as “a valued team member and friend to many in both our junior championship program and junior domestic (program)”.

“He always played the game with passion and his love for the game was infectious as was his support for his beloved Lakers,” the club said.

“In recent weeks, he was planning how he could get a senior domestic team up and running for he and his friends to continue his Bulleen basketball journey.”

The club said the former Marcellin College student was a popular member of the local community.

“Connor was a successful and popular student at Marcellin College, where he was College captain for 2023, and had recently commenced studying Law and Psychological Sciences at La Trobe University.

“We extend our sincere condolences to Nick, Liz, Talia, their extended family, and all of Connor’s friends.”

Funeral arrangements are being made.
