High flying Surf Coast will go into this weekend’s State League 4 top of the table clash with second placed Keilor Wolves on the crest of a goal scoring boom.
The competition leaders last Saturday annihilated bottom side Barnstoneworth United 9-0 at home, with the league’s current leading goalscorer John Pykett snaring a hat-trick, as did speedy English import, Alex Quaynor.
The Torquay north outfit has now hit the back of the net on a staggering 20 occasions in the last three matches.
“Last week’s game was fantastic. We started off a little slow in the first half which sometimes happens but as the game went on. we found our groove and played some really good team football with fantastic quality,” head coach Denis Holtgrefe said this week.
“Alex (Quaynor) was fantastic against Barnstoneworth with two assists and three goals. He is now showing his quality after spending six to seven weeks sidelined with an ankle injury.”
Apart from Pykett, who has taken his season’s tally to a staggering 11 goals from seven matches, Luka Jurkovic, James Pantè and Sam Bickett all scored one goal apiece for the Coasters.
After taking over the helm from Ash Dafter on the eve of the season, Holtgrefe has been pleased with his team’s performance so far, which has yielded seven wins from the opening seven games.
“We have started the season off really well and put in some fantastic performances to date,” he said.
“Everyone has made a lot of sacrifices this season, to help achieve our goal, and as long as we keep our mentality strong and focused on our goal, I am sure it will be a great season.”
The Coasters have a slender two-point lead at the top over the Wolves, against whom they will come up against on Saturday at the Wolves’ Green Gully Reserve.
“We’re looking forward to this coming week’s game against Keilor Wolves,” Holtgrefe said.
“They have been fantastic until this point of the season and have shown again, early on, that they’re going to be right up there come end of season.
“Our lads have been looking forward to this game for a number of weeks now because we have the mentality of wanting to challenge ourselves against the best teams possible and, if we’re at our best, I am sure we can get a good result away from home.”
