Heatherhill’s Joe Rule blitzes 268 not out in MPCA

A batter smashed one of the highest scores in MPCA history — and then walked off. It was among a raft of eye-popping performances by batters and bowlers.

He smashed 16 sixes and a club record — but it could have been much, much more.

Heatherhill opener Joe Rule blitzed 268 not out against French Island in MPCA A1 on Saturday to break the Hills’ all-time record score of 241, set by Mark Newton 20 years ago.

But, with 25 overs still available, he chose to call it a day.

Heatherhill (5-341) had passed French Island’s 337 and stumps were pulled at 3.30pm.

Rule was already on one of the highest scores in MPCA history, but a triple century and even Ben King’s record 321no (made only three weeks ago) were in sight.

“That’s why I said to him, ‘do you want to keep going?’, Heatherhill skipper Brent Vandervalk said.

“He was done, he was cactus. He goes, ‘nup, I’m done’.”

After being dropped on six, Rule unleashed a sizzling display of clean hitting to orchestrate a massive run chase victory.

“He hits a big ball,” Vandervalk said.

“Deep mid on was basically his target. There was a short boundary there but they were going miles over it.

“Usually the first ball of the over he went for to try and put it over the fence to try and get the momentum going our way.”

*Langwarrin’s Kurt Eigenraam produced the bowling performance of the round, taking 8-41 off 25 overs, with seven maidens, in A2.

*Baden Powell’s Ryan Green blasted 160 not out, with 13 fours and 13 sixes, in his side’s win over Mornington in A4. Green went in at 4-37 and walked off at 4-259 off 44 overs, having shared an unconquered 222-run partnership with Graeme Wilson (58no).

*Moorooduc’s Sumeth Premathilake bowled 28 overs straight in the heat to take 6-45 and lead his side to a rousing win over Dromana in MPCA Peninsula 1sts.

James La Brooy chimed in with 4-15 as Langwarrin’s innings expired in the 58th over.

*Baden Powell captain Travis Kellerman made 83 at the top of the list to help the Braves chase down Baxter’s 194. BP pushed on to make 6-260.
