Hallam Kalora Park junior cricket team saved by quads Kevin, Brian, Dylan and Ryan Ranaweera

When it appeared a Hallam cricket club would be unable to field an Under 15 team due to lack of numbers, its passionate coach was devastated — until the Ranaweera quads turned up at training.

They’re the quads who saved a junior cricket team.

They’re Hallam Kalora Park’s awesome foursome.

Ahead of the season the Hawks had only five players for their second under-15 team.

Their hopes of fielding a side were as slim as a stump.

Then brothers Kevin, Brian, Dylan and Ryan Ranaweera turned up to training unannounced on a Monday night, delighting Scott Morrison (not the Prime Minister, the Hallam Kalora Park cricket coach.)

“There’s my team,’’ the southeast’s “Scomo’’ said.

Two days later two more players came to training, giving Hallam an XI.

Morrison said he remained stunned to have quads in his team.

“It’s unbelievable really,’’ he said.

“We had to do a triple-take when they rocked up. We were hanging around the nets and thinking we wouldn’t have a team and then they came.

“When our junior co-ordinator told us they were quads I thought she was joking. That first night we gave them hats and signed them up.’’

The four boys share two kits, which means Morrison must split them in the batting order in games and at training to rotate their gear.

He said they all had ability as all-rounders.

The boys had playing at Carlisle Park and travel past a number of other clubs to get to the Hallam Kalora Park ground.

A Hawks Under 17 player encouraged them to join the club.

“Really timely for us because without them we’d have a team and a half and be having to rotate players,’’ Morrison said.

“Kids don’t like doing that. They want to play cricket. So the quads have given all the other players a game — and they’ve given me something to do.’’

The quads were born at 28 weeks’ gestation at Monash Medical Centre — weighing between 785g and 957g — three months after their parents and sister arrived from Sri Lanka.

With the newcomers on board Hallam started the season with a win over Lynbrook.
