STAND-IN  skipper Tom May carried Gisborne into the Bendigo Football League preliminary final with an inspired final-quarter effort against Golden Square on Sunday.

The Dogs looked in trouble when Golden Square booted the opening goal of the last quarter to lead by 16 points at Queen Elizabeth Oval, but two majors from May, including the goal that put Gisborne in front, helped the Dogs to an 11.11 (77) to 10.13 (73) victory.

May stepped up in the absence of Gisborne captain Casey Summerfield, who is expected to return from injury for this weekend’s clash with Sandhurst.

The match was an arm-wrestle, with Gisborne fighting back from a 13-point quarter-time deficit to lead by three points at half time.

Golden Square rallied again in the third quarter and looked to have the match in its keeping before May’s heroics sparked a Gisborne revival.

Pat McKenna continued his outstanding form in front of goal for the Dogs with four majors. Gisborne president Colin Rodgers said it would take the Dogs’ best to progress to face Strathfieldsaye in this year’s season decider.

The club has teams competing in the seniors, reserves and under-18 preliminary finals.
